FG Nexus Exits Ethereum Treasury Strategy After $45 Million Loss

FG Nexus Exits Ethereum Treasury Strategy After $45 Million Loss
Nasdaq-listed FG Nexus sold all its digital assets before June 30, ending an Ethereum treasury strategy less than a year after launch. The company reported a $45.2 million loss while staking generated only $144,000 in revenue.

Nasdaq-listed FG Nexus has sold all of its digital assets and exited its Ethereum treasury strategy, less than a year after launching it. The company reported a $45.2 million loss from its discontinued digital asset operations for the first half of 2026, while staking generated only $144,000 in total revenue. The dramatic exit highlights the financial risks of corporate crypto treasury strategies when market conditions turn unfavorable.

The company disclosed the completed exit in an August 12 filing, reclassifying its digital asset business as discontinued operations. FG Nexus received $60.9 million in cash from ETH sales during the first half of 2026, with a further $15 million receivable at June 30 that was collected in July. The company held no cryptocurrency at quarter end.

The Rise and Fall of the ETH Treasury

FG Nexus announced its Ethereum treasury strategy in July 2025, raising $200 million to make Ethereum its primary treasury asset. The company planned to generate returns through staking and other Ethereum opportunities. By September 28, the company reported holding 50,770 ETH, valued at approximately $207 million at the time, with an average purchase price near $3,860.

That was the peak. As Ethereum's price declined over the following months, the value of the treasury shrank, creating mounting unrealized losses. By June 2026, the company was unwinding its position entirely, selling all remaining ETH and exiting the strategy.

The Financial Damage

The $45.2 million loss from discontinued digital asset operations included a $41.2 million loss on ETH digital assets, a $2.8 million impairment on digital intangible assets, and $1.8 million in general and administrative expenses. Against that, the business recorded a $398,000 gain on digital intangible assets and $144,000 in staking revenue.

The stark contrast between $144,000 in staking revenue and $45.2 million in losses illustrates the financial tradeoff of the treasury strategy. The company bet that Ethereum's price appreciation would outweigh the modest income from staking, but the bet went the other way. The company's broader consolidated net loss for the first half reached $56.9 million.

A Cautionary Tale for Corporate Crypto Treasuries

The FG Nexus exit is a cautionary tale for other companies considering crypto treasury strategies. While Bitcoin treasury firms like Metaplanet and Strategy have attracted significant attention, the FG Nexus case shows that these strategies can go badly wrong when the market moves against the company.

The exit also raises questions about the sustainability of corporate crypto treasuries as a category. Several crypto treasury firms have faced financial difficulties in 2026, with industry-wide cost cutting and declining asset values putting pressure on balance sheets. FG Nexus's decision to exit entirely, rather than hold and wait for a recovery, suggests that some companies are losing confidence in the strategy.

Redirecting to Real Estate

FG Nexus announced on July 1 that its board had authorized management to exit digital assets and create a real estate operating subsidiary focused on manufactured housing properties. CEO Kyle Cerminara said the company intended to reallocate all capital from digital assets to cash-flow-producing real estate.

The shift from Ethereum to manufactured housing real estate represents a dramatic strategic pivot. Crypto and real estate could not be more different as asset classes, and the move suggests that FG Nexus's experience with crypto has soured the company on volatile assets entirely. The company is also considering a potential combination with FG Communities, though discussions remain preliminary.

What This Means for Ethereum

The FG Nexus exit is not a major market event in terms of ETH price impact, but it is symbolic of a broader trend. Corporate Ethereum treasuries have not gained the same traction as Bitcoin treasuries, and the few companies that tried the strategy have faced significant challenges. The exit removes one of the few corporate ETH holders from the market.

For Ethereum, the loss of a corporate treasury holder is a minor negative, but the broader trend is more concerning. If other companies that adopted crypto treasury strategies follow FG Nexus's lead and exit, the selling pressure could become a more significant market factor. For now, the largest corporate crypto holders remain committed, but the FG Nexus exit is a reminder that not all corporate crypto strategies will survive a market downturn.
