Metaplanet CEO Denies Selling Bitcoin, Confirms 43,000 BTC Holdings

Metaplanet CEO Denies Selling Bitcoin, Confirms 43,000 BTC Holdings
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich dismissed bitcoin sale rumors, clarifying that the transfer of 5,014 BTC worth approximately $320 million was a routine custody operation between addresses. No bitcoin was sold, and holdings remain at 43,000 BTC.

Tokyo-listed Metaplanet is not dumping its bitcoin. CEO Simon Gerovich moved quickly to dismiss reports of a massive sale, clarifying that the large BTC transfer flagged by blockchain trackers on Wednesday was merely a routine custody transfer and not a liquidation.

The company transferred 5,014 BTC, worth approximately $320 million at current prices, between Metaplanet custodial addresses over a 24-hour period. The movement sparked speculation that the firm was preparing to sell those coins, especially given that Bitcoin trades far below Metaplanet's estimated average acquisition price of $96,191.

What the CEO Said

Gerovich was direct in his response: the transfer was a routine custody operation, no bitcoin was sold, and the company's holdings remain at 43,000 BTC. The clarification came hours after onchain analysts flagged the movement of 3,881 BTC and then 5,014 BTC from wallets linked to the firm, drawing immediate attention from market watchers.

The denial is significant because Metaplanet is one of the largest publicly traded corporate bitcoin holders. Any sale by a treasury of its size would send ripples through the market, particularly at a time when Bitcoin has been trading in a narrow range near $63,500 and investor sentiment is fragile.

The Broader Scrutiny on Treasury Firms

Digital asset treasury firms have come under increasing scrutiny as investors watch for any sign of major corporate holders trimming their positions. These companies, led by industry giant Strategy, accumulated massive Bitcoin positions during the bull market but now face the reality of holding assets worth significantly less than their acquisition costs.

Strategy has been selling portions of its bitcoin holdings to fund dividends on its preferred stock, repurchase shares, and replenish its U.S. dollar reserve. That precedent has made every large wallet movement by a corporate holder a potential signal of selling pressure.

Wallet Movements vs. Actual Sales

The incident highlights a recurring challenge in onchain analysis: a wallet movement does not establish that beneficial ownership changed. Companies can move Bitcoin between custodians, cold wallets, trading accounts, or collateral arrangements without selling a single coin. When Metaplanet moved 3,881 BTC earlier this week, the same questions arose.

Metaplanet has previously used Bitcoin-backed financing and is building businesses around its holdings, including studying Bitcoin-backed credit products and expanding into securities. Those plans create legitimate reasons for moving Bitcoin between addresses that have nothing to do with selling.

What This Means for the Market

For now, the denial should ease immediate concerns about corporate Bitcoin selling pressure. But the episode underscores how closely the market is watching every move by large holders. With Bitcoin stuck near $63,500 after the CPI report and corporate treasuries sitting on significant unrealized losses, any large wallet movement will continue to trigger speculation.

The next verified update on Metaplanet's holdings will come from the company's regulatory disclosures. Until then, the CEO's statement that no bitcoin was sold and holdings remain at 43,000 BTC is the official position.
