Ethereum Stalls Below $2,000 as $90 Oil Lifts September Fed Hike Odds to 79% — $1,955 Is the Line That Decides It

Ethereum Stalls Below $2,000 as $90 Oil Lifts September Fed Hike Odds to 79% — $1,955 Is the Line That Decides It
Ethereum trades below $2,000 as higher oil prices and rising Fed hike odds pressure risk assets, while ETF inflows and strong technical support keep bullish hopes alive.

Ethereum keeps arriving at the same wall. ETH traded near $1,927 on July 23 after an intraday high of $1,941 — a recovery of more than 27% from June's $1,514 low, but one that has now failed repeatedly around $1,955, leaving the psychological $2,000 level just out of reach. Three forces are keeping it there: oil, the Federal Reserve, and an exchange shutdown.

Oil Reopens the Rate Question

Crude supplied the latest pressure. West Texas Intermediate pushed above $90 a barrel for a fifth consecutive session of gains after attacks by Iran-aligned Houthis on Saudi oil tankers raised supply concerns across the region. Higher energy costs feed inflation, and inflation narrows the Fed's room to hold policy steady.

Rate traders have already repositioned. The probability of a September Fed hike climbed to 79% from 68%, according to CME FedWatch data. July is still expected to bring no change, but another oil-driven inflation print could lift Treasury yields and squeeze risk assets like Ethereum.

Equities added a second drag. US stocks weakened after Alphabet raised its 2026 capital-spending forecast to $195–$205 billion and posted negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion as quarterly expenditure doubled to $44.9 billion, sending its shares lower premarket. A broad technology retreat tends to limit speculative crypto demand, since both sectors trade off the same rate expectations.

ETF Inflows Are Doing the Defending

Institutional demand has been the counterweight. US spot Ethereum ETFs pulled in $72.64 million in net inflows on July 22 per SoSoValue, with BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust accounting for $53.47 million — evidence that regulated products kept attracting capital even while ETH stalled below $2,000.

A separate uncertainty arrived from BitMEX, which announced it will cease operations on September 23 following a strategic review by parent HDR Global Trading, telling customers to close positions and withdraw funds before the deadline. The venue popularized perpetual swaps and has served more than 2 million traders since 2014. Position transfers and forced closures could temporarily thin liquidity or push leverage onto rival platforms — though with Binance, Bybit and OKX running larger derivatives businesses, Ethereum's global perpetual market is not going anywhere.

The Chart: Constructive, but Losing Speed

The daily structure still favors buyers. ETH holds above Supertrend support at $1,744.73, with the indicator staying green through the July advance, while a Chaikin Money Flow reading of 0.12 shows buying volume exceeding selling volume over the measurement period. The obstacle is the $1,941–$1,955 ceiling, which price must close above before the daily structure opens a path to $2,000.

Analyst Ted Pillows argues spot demand has protected the recovery, saying the key support zone hasn't been lost and that Ethereum could begin its next leg up within days. He maps $2,030 as the first major upside barrier, then $2,179, with heavier supply near $2,400 — and identifies support between roughly $1,834 and $1,897, with deeper demand at $1,730 and $1,540.

The four-hour chart shows ETH compressing under $1,955.40 while holding an ascending trendline from the June 26 low, with buyers defending the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement at $1,860.86 and the higher-low sequence intact. Momentum, however, has cooled ahead of the test: four-hour RSI has slipped to 57.46 from recent highs, below its 63.30 signal average, and MACD has printed a bearish crossover with the line at 13.48 under the 15.94 signal and the histogram at -2.46. Neither confirms a reversal, but both show buyers losing pace at resistance.

Where It Breaks Either Way

The liquidation map explains why $1,955 matters so much. CoinGlass's three-day heatmap places the largest nearby short-liquidation cluster at $1,958–$1,965 — meaning a push through that band could force bearish positions closed and accelerate a run at $2,000. Downside liquidity is heaviest around $1,895–$1,905, with another dense pocket near $1,875.

On the bear side, losing the rising four-hour trendline would expose $1,860 first. A close below that would damage the higher-low structure and open $1,786.63, then daily Supertrend support near $1,745 — and a break under $1,745 would invalidate the recovery thesis entirely, reopening $1,682.

The setup reduces to a single requirement: sustained spot volume above $1,955. Without it, the liquidity sitting around $1,900 is likely to keep dragging price back into the range — while oil supply disruptions, rising September hike odds, and forced position reductions ahead of BitMEX's closure remain the external risks that could decide the outcome before the chart does.
