Bitcoin Transactions Hit Fourth-Highest Daily Count Ever

Bitcoin transaction activity surges to the fourth-highest daily count ever, illustrated with Bitcoin and rising transaction bars.

Summary :

  • Bitcoin processed 893,391 transactions on Sept. 6, its fourth-highest daily count ever.

  • The count is above the 99th percentile of all historical daily readings.

  • Transactions rose 23.4% day over day and 102.6% year over year.

  • Transfers under 0.01 BTC make up ~80% of 2026 activity, up from 44% in 2023.

  • Active addresses fell 10.7% while fees dropped to $0.19 on average.

Bitcoin transactions just processed its fourth-busiest day in history, and almost nobody was home to see it. On Sept. 6 the network confirmed 893,391 transactions, up 23.4% from 723,854 the prior day and 102.6% from 441,035 a year earlier, a count Galaxy Research places above the 99th percentile of every daily reading ever taken. Only April 23, 2024 (927,010), Sept. 8, 2024 (910,083) and June 23, 2026 (862,979) were bigger.

"Yesterday was the 4th largest daily transaction count in Bitcoin's history. The daily transaction count of 893,391 is above the 99th percentile of its historical range." — Galaxy Research (@glxyresearch), September 7, 2026

Record Counts, Fewer People

Here is the twist that keeps the headline honest. Active addresses fell 10.7% to roughly 415,000 on the same day. Fewer participants, 23% more transactions: that gap is the signature of batching and automation, exchange settlement runs and scripted wallets sweeping hundreds of outputs at once, not a wave of new users. Transferred value climbed 33.8% to $3.36 billion, real money by any measure, but it moved through a shrinking number of hands.

The micro-transfer shift is the deeper structural story. CryptoQuant and CoinMarketCap data put sub-0.01 BTC transfers at about 80% of 2026 transactions, up from 44% in 2023. Galaxy declined to attribute the surge to Ordinals or Runes, and the 2023 inscription peak of over 307,000 daily transactions did not come close to this scale. What remains is automated plumbing: service-layer payouts, custodian batching, machine-to-machine flows that Bitcoin's base layer now handles at an average fee of $0.19 and a median transfer around $34.69.

The Fee Question the Record Makes Awkward

Total daily fees actually fell 8.1% to $191,073 while throughput set a near-record. Cheap blockspace is a user victory, but the security-budget math is getting harder to ignore: miners secured a near-record day for less than the cost of a mid-range condo. If transaction counts are being driven by automation, that volume is fee-rate insensitive and could vanish as quickly as it appeared, the same on-chain noise question we asked when OG wallets moved 1,500 BTC after 15 years and when the wallet in the $293B lawsuit stirred.

ETF flows, the actual demand signal of this cycle, never touch the base layer; they settle off-chain inside custodians, which means the record tells you nothing about institutional demand. Watch whether the 800K-plus daily counts hold through September without the fee revenue following. A network doing record volume at $0.19 per transaction is either demonstrating unmatched efficiency or previewing its funding problem. Probably both.
