Binance FX perpetuals are going after the largest financial market in the world. On Sept. 21, the exchange will launch a USDBRLUSDT perpetual contract tracking the US dollar against the Brazilian real, settling in USDT and offering up to 100x leverage, with the twist that keeps trading through weekends and public holidays. The move extends the exchange's derivatives platform from crypto and stock-linked contracts into the $9.6 trillion-a-day foreign exchange market, and it plants a flag in territory that rival venues have been quietly claiming all year.
How the Binance FX perpetuals handle the weekend
Traditional FX trades around the clock from Monday to Friday, but liquidity providers and major venues close for the weekend. Binance has designed a dual pricing system for exactly that gap. During regular foreign exchange hours, the contract's index price draws on a weighted group of third-party market data providers tracking the underlying USD/BRL rate. Once those external markets close, the exchange switches to a mechanism derived from its own orderbook, using an exponentially weighted moving average that gives more weight to recent observations while smoothing short-lived spikes. When FX reopens, the external reference takes over again.
The design has a built-in caveat traders should understand: on Saturday night, the contract's price is shaped entirely by activity on Binance's own venue while the deepest institutional market for the real is closed. A large order can move the weekend price even when nobody can arbitrage against the underlying currency. Binance's head of derivatives, Shunyet Jan, framed the structure as extending price discovery beyond conventional market hours, and as giving traders a way to hedge or take directional positions at any time. Both are true. So is the mirror image: the venue with the thinnest reference can set the price nobody else can challenge until Monday.
Crypto exchanges are rebuilding the FX desk
The USD/BRL contract is not Binance's first step outside crypto. In May the exchange added TradFi perpetuals tied to Oracle, Disney, Uber, Cisco and Home Depot, settled in USDT with up to 10x leverage, part of the same strategy that produced its tokenized Treasury yield product. The FX contract raises the leverage ceiling tenfold. Competitors have already staked the ground: Bybit introduced 24/7 perpetuals tracking EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY less than two weeks ago, also USDT-settled with 100x caps, while Kraken launched FX perpetuals in April 2025 covering the euro, pound, Australian dollar, yen and franc at 50x leverage, building on a spot currency business that processed $5.7 billion in the first part of 2025.
The prize explains the pile-on. The BIS triennial survey put average daily over-the-counter FX turnover at $9.6 trillion in April 2025, up 28% from $7.5 trillion in 2022, with FX swaps at $4 trillion daily and spot at $3 trillion. Crypto's entire daily derivatives volume is a rounding error against that, so even a small migration of retail currency flow into USDT-settled contracts is meaningful revenue for exchanges that already own the trader's account.
Leverage, liquidation and the US question
The 100x cap deserves the loudest warning label. At 100x leverage, a trader controls a position worth 100 times the posted collateral, and Binance's own risk disclosures note that adverse moves can trigger liquidation when collateral falls below the maintenance margin. The Brazilian real is a volatile emerging market currency, sensitive to domestic interest rate decisions, fiscal headlines, commodity prices and risk sentiment, which is precisely why it offers the kind of volatility leveraged traders pay for. The contract's eligibility depends on regional restrictions, and Binance's global announcement does not extend the product to the United States, where Binance.com does not operate and the CFTC's 2023 settlement, which cost the exchange $2.85 billion and required it to block US customers, still defines the boundary.
That regulatory history is the real constraint on this market. A US-listed version of a 100x FX perpetual would face CFTC registration and retail protection rules that offshore venues structure around, the same wall that has kept regulated US onchain perps behind approval processes like the Bitnomial arrangement. Meanwhile, self-custodial alternatives are multiplying, and exchanges keep pushing TradFi assets deeper into their institutional product stacks.
Watch two things after the Sept. 21 launch: the weekend price gaps between the contract's orderbook price and Monday's real FX open, and whether funding rates stay sane through the first Brazilian rate decision that lands on a weekend-closed market. If the weekend pricing holds reasonably close to Monday's open, Binance has a genuine 24/7 FX product. If it doesn't, the contract becomes a volatility casino priced by whoever is awake, and regulators already skeptical of 100x leverage will have their exhibit A.
