About TN Lee

About TN Lee

TN Lee is the Co-Founder and CEO of Pendle, a decentralized finance protocol designed to enable the tokenization and trading of future yield. He co-founded Pendle with Vu Nguyen. Before founding Pendle, Lee worked with Kyber Network in a professional capacity. His experience in early DeFi infrastructure informed the founding thesis for Pendle — that yield, like principal, could be separated into distinct, tradeable financial instruments on-chain.

Pendle addresses a gap in the DeFi ecosystem: while significant infrastructure existed for trading assets, there was limited tooling for trading the yield generated by those assets separately. By tokenizing yield-bearing positions into Principal Tokens (PT) and Yield Tokens (YT), Pendle enabled users to take distinct positions on the underlying asset versus the income stream it generates — analogous to fixed-income structures in traditional finance where bond principal and coupon payments can be traded independently.

Lee leads Pendle's strategy and product development, overseeing its expansion into new chains, asset types, and the launch of Boros, Pendle's dedicated onchain funding-rate trading product.

Pendle & Boros

Pendle's core mechanism involves wrapping yield-bearing tokens (such as staked ETH, lending-protocol receipt tokens, or liquid restaking tokens) and splitting them into two components: a Principal Token (PT), representing the underlying asset redeemable at maturity, and a Yield Token (YT), representing the right to receive the yield generated until that maturity date. These components can then be traded separately on Pendle's AMM, enabling users to lock in fixed yield by purchasing PT at a discount, or to speculate on or hedge variable yield by trading YT.

This structure creates onchain approximations of fixed-income instruments — specifically stripped coupon bonds — within DeFi, allowing for yield hedging, yield speculation, and fixed-rate strategies without relying on centralized intermediaries. The AMM design is custom-built for time-sensitive yield instruments, accounting for the time value decay inherent in YT positions as they approach maturity.

Boros is a related but separate product from Pendle designed specifically for onchain funding-rate trading. Where Pendle's primary markets focus on yield from lending and staking, Boros targets the funding rates of perpetual futures markets — a different yield source with different risk characteristics. The two products are developed by the same team and share ecosystem infrastructure but represent distinct market designs.

Key Contributions

Pendle Co-Founding

Co-founded Pendle with Vu Nguyen, designing and launching a protocol for tokenizing and trading yield components of DeFi positions separately from their underlying principal.

PT/YT Yield Tokenization

Led the development of the Principal Token and Yield Token model, creating onchain analogues to fixed-income strips and enabling yield hedging and speculation strategies.

Custom Yield AMM

Oversaw design of Pendle's specialized AMM, built to correctly price time-sensitive yield instruments as they approach maturity — a non-trivial design challenge not addressed by standard AMM models.

Boros Funding-Rate Market

Led development of Boros, a separate onchain product for trading perpetual futures funding rates, extending the yield-trading thesis into a different segment of DeFi market structure.

DeFi Fixed Income Infrastructure

Advanced the thesis that DeFi needs purpose-built fixed-income infrastructure, influencing how protocols, DAOs, and institutional participants approach onchain yield strategies.

Why TN Lee Matters in Crypto

Pendle introduced fixed-income mechanics to DeFi in a structurally rigorous way, enabling yield tokenization and trading that had no meaningful precedent in the Ethereum ecosystem. The protocol has become relevant not just for retail DeFi users but for DAOs managing treasury yield, institutional participants seeking DeFi fixed-rate exposure, and protocols looking to integrate yield markets. TN Lee's contribution is in translating a traditional finance concept — the separation of principal and income stream — into a functional, permissionless on-chain protocol, and in executing a multi-year product roadmap that expanded Pendle's scope from simple yield markets to funding-rate trading through Boros.
