Bio
Richie Lai is a cryptocurrency entrepreneur and cybersecurity specialist who co-founded Bittrex in 2014. Before entering the exchange business, he worked in security at Microsoft, Qualys and Amazon. He later served as Bittrex’s chief information officer and led its U.S. business as CEO during its 2023 wind-down.
About Richie Lai
Richie Lai’s route into cryptocurrency began with computer security. Before helping launch Bittrex, he spent years working on the threats facing large technology companies: malicious software, compromised systems and vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit. That experience became a defining part of his work in the exchange business, where protecting accounts and managing digital assets were central operational responsibilities.
In 2014, Lai co-founded Bittrex with Bill Shihara and Rami Kawach. All three brought security experience from Amazon. Their project placed them in a different part of the cryptocurrency industry from the people designing blockchains: they were building the infrastructure through which customers could access and trade digital assets.
From Microsoft and Qualys to Amazon
Lai spent 12 years at Microsoft working in security. His background included security engineering and internet-crime-related work, with an emphasis on threats such as malware, botnets and web exploits.
He subsequently joined Qualys, where he helped launch its Malware Detection Service. The move continued his focus on identifying threats and finding weaknesses before they could cause wider damage.
At Amazon, Lai worked in information security and managed a security operations centre that ran around the clock. His responsibilities covered incident response, threat intelligence, monitoring and vulnerability management. These roles gave him experience with the ongoing work of protecting systems, beyond their initial design.
Building Bittrex
Bittrex brought that security background into cryptocurrency trading. Lai served as its chief information officer, while the founding team developed the exchange’s trading and wallet infrastructure.
For customers, an exchange provided a practical point of access to markets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Behind that interface were the systems required to process orders, manage wallets and handle transfers. Those operational demands help explain why the founders’ technical backgrounds were an important part of Bittrex’s identity.
Lai’s contribution belongs to this infrastructure side of cryptocurrency. His work centred on running an exchange and supporting access to digital assets, rather than creating a blockchain protocol or issuing a cryptocurrency of his own.
Leading the U.S. Business Through Its Wind-Down
By March 2023, Lai was serving as Bittrex’s U.S. CEO. On March 31, he announced that the company would wind down its American operations. He attributed the decision to the regulatory and economic environment, saying that continuing the business was no longer economically viable.
Bittrex ceased U.S. operations effective April 30, 2023, and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware on May 8. These events marked the end of its U.S. exchange operations.
Bittrex Global followed a separate wind-down later that year, terminating trading on December 4, 2023. The two timelines should be kept distinct when describing the company’s history and Lai’s role.
