Nick Johnson

Nick Johnson

Founder & Lead Developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), ENS Labs

Bio

Nick Johnson is Founder and Lead Developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS), the decentralized naming protocol for Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks. ENS enables human-readable names such as alice.eth to resolve to Ethereum addresses, content hashes, and other onchain data, replacing hexadecimal addresses with user-friendly identifiers.

Johnson built ENS while working at the Ethereum Foundation, where he had previously contributed to Swarm — Ethereum's decentralized storage layer — and other Ethereum infrastructure projects. His earlier career included software engineering at Google. He is from New Zealand. ENS launched in May 2017, has been governed by ENS DAO since November 2021 with the ENS token used for governance participation, and ENS Labs serves as the development organization responsible for core protocol engineering. In 2026, Johnson continues leading ENS Labs' engineering work, including ENS multichain naming, L2/Namechain scaling strategy per ENSIP updates, and expanding identity and address-resolution use cases across wallets and browsers.

Work & Project Background

  • ENS Labs

Founder & Lead Developer of Ethereum Name Service (ENS)

Key Contributions

ENS Founder

Founded and leads development of ENS, the primary naming standard for Ethereum, enabling .eth domains and human-readable identity for blockchain addresses.

ENS Protocol Architecture

Designed the ENS resolver and registry architecture that became the reference implementation for blockchain naming systems across the Ethereum ecosystem.

ENSIP Standards

Developed and maintains ENSIP (ENS Improvement Proposals) standards governing ENS protocol upgrades and name resolution specifications.

L2 & Multichain Naming

Leading ENS research into L2 scaling and cross-chain name resolution to reduce costs and expand ENS accessibility across Ethereum scaling networks.

Ethereum Foundation Contributions

Former Ethereum Foundation contributor who worked on Swarm and other core Ethereum infrastructure before founding ENS.

Timeline

Early Career
Software engineer at Google; worked on developer tooling and distributed systems.
Pre-2017
Ethereum Foundation contributor; worked on Swarm (decentralized storage) and early Ethereum infrastructure.
May 2017
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) launched on Ethereum mainnet; Johnson as Founder and Lead Developer.
2019
ENS transition to a permanent registrar; ENS protocol expanded with subdomains, resolvers, and reverse records.
November 2021
ENS DAO launched; ENS token distributed to existing holders and contributors; governance transferred to token holders.
2022–2026
ENS Labs continued as development organization; ENSIP standards updates; ENS Name Wrapper launched; L2 and multichain naming research and development; Namechain L2 strategy developed.
