Bio
Fabian Vogelsteller is a German blockchain developer and entrepreneur best known for co-founding LUKSO and for his earlier contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem. He co-authored the ERC-20 token standard with Vitalik Buterin in November 2015, helping establish the common interface that became foundational to fungible tokens on Ethereum. He later proposed ERC-725, a smart-contract account standard that became an important technical foundation for LUKSO's Universal Profiles. Before founding LUKSO, Vogelsteller worked on Ethereum developer infrastructure including web3.js, the Mist browser and the Ethereum Wallet/dApp tooling. LUKSO extends this standards-oriented work toward blockchain-based identity, smart accounts, digital ownership, creators and social applications.
About Fabian Vogelsteller
Fabian Vogelsteller is a blockchain architect, developer and entrepreneur whose career spans two major phases of blockchain development. In the first phase, he helped build Ethereum's early developer and token infrastructure as part of the Ethereum Foundation from 2015 to 2018. In the second phase, he co-founded LUKSO, an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain focused on social applications, creators, digital identity and smart accounts. His technical contributions include co-authoring the ERC-20 token standard, proposing the ERC-725 smart-account standard, and building early Ethereum tools including web3.js, the Mist browser and the Ethereum Wallet. He is not an Ethereum co-founder — he was an important early Ethereum developer who shaped the ecosystem's developer tooling and token standards.
Education & Early Background
Specific academic credentials — university, degree, field and graduation dates — could not be independently verified from authoritative educational records as of August 2026. This profile does not infer Computer Science credentials merely because Vogelsteller became a blockchain developer. His professional background before Ethereum includes design and web development work, which influenced his approach to blockchain user experience and developer tooling. His combination of product design sensibility and software development capability is reflected in the user-facing tools he built at Ethereum, including wallet software and a dApp browser, rather than only low-level protocol work.
Joining Ethereum
According to the official LUKSO website, Vogelsteller was part of the Ethereum Foundation in its early days, from 2015 to 2018. He served as a lead dApp developer, focusing on developer tooling and user-facing applications rather than core protocol development. This profile does not describe him as an Ethereum co-founder or founder of Ethereum — he was an important early Ethereum developer who built key infrastructure, not one of the protocol's originators. The Ethereum Foundation relationship is confirmed by the LUKSO about page and by Vogelsteller's own X profile, which describes him as a "former Ðapp developer of the @ethereumfndn."
Mist
Mist was an early Ethereum dApp browser — a desktop application that combined wallet functionality with the ability to interact with decentralized applications and smart contracts. It was one of the first attempts to provide a user-friendly interface for the Ethereum ecosystem, allowing users to browse dApps, manage accounts and interact with smart contracts from a single application. Vogelsteller worked on Mist during his time at the Ethereum Foundation. Mist is historical software and is no longer maintained or current; this profile does not present discontinued software as active. The Mist project was eventually deprecated as the ecosystem moved toward browser-extension wallets and other approaches.
Ethereum Wallet
The Ethereum Wallet was an early wallet application that allowed users to manage ETH accounts and interact with smart contracts on Ethereum. According to the LUKSO about page, Vogelsteller built the official Ethereum Wallet. The wallet was related to the Mist browser project and provided early Ethereum users with account management, token interaction and smart-contract functionality. This is historical Ethereum software, not a current wallet product. This profile does not provide obsolete wallet instructions or imply that this wallet is still in use.
web3.js
web3.js is a JavaScript library that allows applications to communicate with Ethereum nodes and smart contracts. It provides functions for reading blockchain data, calling smart contract methods, sending transactions, handling accounts and interacting with Ethereum via JSON-RPC. Vogelsteller is associated with the creation and early development of web3.js, which became one of the most widely used JavaScript libraries in the Ethereum ecosystem. This profile distinguishes between his original and early contribution to web3.js and the current community-maintained development of the library. He does not single-handedly maintain the current version of web3.js. The library has evolved through community contributions and multiple major versions since his early work.
ERC-20 Token Standard
ERC-20 is the Ethereum token standard that defines a common interface for fungible tokens. According to Ethereum's official EIP records, EIP-20 was authored by Fabian Vogelsteller and Vitalik Buterin. Ethereum.org states that ERC-20 was proposed by Fabian Vogelsteller in November 2015. The standard defines a set of functions and events that any fungible token contract can implement, including: totalSupply (total token supply), balanceOf (account balance), transfer (send tokens), transferFrom (transfer on behalf of another account), approve (allow another address to spend tokens) and allowance (check approved spending amount). This profile accurately presents both official records: Vogelsteller co-authored ERC-20 with Vitalik Buterin. He did not single-handedly invent ERC-20, and Vitalik Buterin is not erased from the standard's authorship history.
Why ERC-20 Became Important
Before a common token interface, applications could implement fungible tokens differently, creating interoperability problems for wallets, exchanges and dApps. ERC-20 gave the ecosystem a predictable interface for interacting with fungible tokens. This interoperability contributed to the growth of ICOs (initial coin offerings), stablecoins, governance tokens, DeFi protocols and tokenized assets. ERC-20 did not create all of these sectors — they emerged from many contributors and broader market forces — but the standard's common interface made it significantly easier for tokens to be listed, traded and integrated across platforms. ERC-20 became the most widely implemented token standard on Ethereum and one of the most influential standards in blockchain history.
ERC-20 Authorship
This profile follows a strict accuracy rule: where discussing formal EIP authorship, both Fabian Vogelsteller and Vitalik Buterin are presented as ERC-20 co-authors. The preferred wording is "Fabian Vogelsteller co-authored the ERC-20 token standard with Vitalik Buterin" or "Fabian Vogelsteller was a principal author of ERC-20 alongside Vitalik Buterin." This profile does not use clickbait wording such as "the man who invented every Ethereum token" and does not call Vogelsteller "creator of Ethereum tokens." He is accurately described as a co-author of the ERC-20 token standard.
ERC-725
ERC-725 is a smart-contract account standard proposed by Fabian Vogelsteller in 2017. According to official LUKSO documentation and the ERC-725 Alliance, it defines a blockchain-based account system for smart-contract accounts. ERC-725 should not be confused with ERC-721 (the non-fungible token standard). ERC-725 defines smart-contract-account functionality designed to store public/verifiable information and execute arbitrary smart-contract calls. The standard has been developed into sub-components: ERC725X (the execution component) and ERC725Y (generic key-value data storage). The ERC-725 Alliance is an industry group promoting adoption of the standard.
ERC725X
ERC725X is the execution component of the ERC-725 standard. It defines how a smart-contract account can execute operations and calls, including calling other contracts, deploying contracts, and performing batch operations. This allows a smart account to act as a programmable entity that can interact with the blockchain in flexible ways, rather than being limited to simple value transfers. The execution layer is what makes ERC-725 accounts "smart" — they can run logic, not just hold assets.
ERC725Y
ERC725Y is the generic key-value data storage component of the ERC-725 standard. It allows smart-contract accounts to store arbitrary data in a structured way, using keys to reference stored values. This can be used for metadata, identity information, permissions, account configuration and other data that an account needs to function as more than a simple address. Data stored on-chain via ERC725Y is public and verifiable — this profile does not call on-chain data private, as all data on a public blockchain is visible to anyone who reads the contract.
From Wallet Addresses to Smart Accounts
Traditional Ethereum accounts (externally owned accounts, or EOAs) are controlled by a private key that maps to an address. Smart-contract accounts, by contrast, are programmable contracts that can include permissions, metadata, execution logic and recovery or access systems where implemented. Vogelsteller's ERC-725 work anticipated broader smart-account and account-abstraction ideas that have become major areas of development in the Ethereum ecosystem. ERC-725 is not identical to ERC-4337 (Ethereum's account abstraction proposal) — they are different technical approaches to related problems, and this profile does not conflate them.
Blockchain-Based Identity
ERC-725-style accounts can be used for public identity, organization profiles, creator profiles, asset metadata, permissions and verifiable claims. This is a broad concept of "identity" that means an on-chain account with associated metadata and capabilities. Blockchain identity does not automatically equal government identity, KYC verification, anonymous identity or legal personhood unless specific systems provide those functions. Universal Profiles on LUKSO are one implementation of blockchain-based identity, but they should not be confused with government-issued identity or regulatory KYC systems.
Founding LUKSO
According to the official LUKSO Foundation page, "LUKSO began in 2017 with a vision for blockchain-based creative economies led by Fabian Vogelsteller and Marjorie Hernandez." Vogelsteller's own Medium post confirms: "The LUKSO project started out with an idea by my partner Marjorie Hernandez in 2017." LUKSO was therefore co-founded by Fabian Vogelsteller and Marjorie Hernandez. This profile does not present Vogelsteller as the sole founder. The initial vision combined Vogelsteller's technical standards expertise with Hernandez's background in brand strategy, design and innovation. The project was initially structured with both co-founders leading the effort.
Marjorie Hernandez
Marjorie Hernandez is co-founder of LUKSO. According to the LUKSO about page, she is a "multi-faceted innovation and product expert, equal parts entrepreneur and designer." She is a Caracas-born trained architect, strategist and innovation consultant who built and led EY's Innovation Lab in Berlin before founding LUKSO. She worked in art direction across Europe before establishing herself as a brand strategist for Swiss and German brands, and created and managed EY's Digital Innovation Lab as a Digital Transformation and Strategy Executive, where she worked closely on Ethereum and with the IOTA Foundation. Her current involvement status should be verified through current official LUKSO sources, as leadership structures have evolved since founding. This profile does not erase her co-founder role regardless of current organizational changes.
What Is LUKSO?
LUKSO is an open, permissionless Layer-1 EVM blockchain focused on social applications, culture, creators, digital identity, smart profiles and digital ownership. It is not an Ethereum Layer 2 — it is an independent blockchain network with its own validators, consensus and native token (LYX). LUKSO uses an unmodified version of Ethereum's EVM environment, meaning Ethereum-style smart contracts and developer tools can work with LUKSO. The network is designed around Universal Profiles and LUKSO Standard Proposals (LSPs), which extend the ERC-725 smart-account concept into a full ecosystem of identity and asset standards.
LUKSO as a Layer-1 Blockchain
LUKSO is an independent Layer-1 blockchain. It has its own validators, its own consensus mechanism (Proof of Stake), its own EVM execution environment and its own native token (LYX). It is not an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution — Ethereum and LUKSO are separate networks that do not share state or security. EVM compatibility means that Ethereum-style smart contracts written in Solidity and Ethereum developer tools can work with LUKSO, but this does not mean the two networks are the same. LUKSO's current site indicates it uses an unmodified version of Ethereum's EVM environment.
Universal Profiles
Universal Profiles are LUKSO's smart-contract-based accounts built around ERC-725 and LUKSO Standard Proposals. They are designed to combine identity, assets, permissions and account functionality in a single programmable account. Potential capabilities include profile metadata, asset ownership, permissions, smart-contract execution, multiple controllers, social identity, recovery options and key management. Universal Profiles are a central part of LUKSO's vision for making blockchain accounts more human-readable and functional than traditional wallet addresses. This profile uses current LUKSO documentation and does not claim Universal Profiles eliminate all seed-phrase or security problems automatically.
