Bio
Andrew Hohns, PhD, is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Newmarket Capital and the founder of Battery Finance. Newmarket is a Philadelphia-based SEC-registered investment adviser focused on structured opportunities sourced from banks and financial institutions. Battery Finance is its Bitcoin-related strategy, designed to combine real-world credit with Bitcoin as additional collateral or a long-duration balance-sheet asset.
Career Background
Hohns earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School (2000), a Master of Liberal Arts from Penn's School of Arts and Sciences (2006), and a Ph.D. in Applied Economics and Managerial Sciences from Wharton (2012). He spent approximately two decades in structured credit, including as Managing Director at Cohen & Company (2001–2012) working on municipal securities and structured-credit strategies, and as Managing Director at Mariner Investment Group (2012–2020) where he helped build the IIFC risk-transfer strategy. He also served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU Stern School of Business (2012–2015).
Newmarket Capital
In 2020, Hohns founded Newmarket Capital. Newmarket manages institutional capital in structured credit and risk-transfer opportunities; it is not a retail crypto lender. His official biography credits him with overseeing approximately $50 billion of notional risk-transfer structuring — this is a company biography claim about notional risk transfer, not Battery assets under management.
Battery Finance
In 2022, Hohns founded Battery Finance as a Newmarket affiliate and strategy connecting real-world assets and Bitcoin. Battery Finance uses Bitcoin within lending structures tied to real-world assets. An early reported transaction paired a multifamily real-estate refinancing with Bitcoin collateral. Deal size, loan-to-value, custody and performance are transaction-specific and dynamic; Bitcoin collateral does not remove credit, custody, liquidity or price risk. Newmarket is an SEC-registered investment adviser; not every affiliate, vehicle or Bitcoin-related offering necessarily has identical registration status.
Board Roles
As of 2025–2026, Hohns holds board roles including at Fold Holdings Group and Bitcoin Development Corporation; these should be confirmed from current official sources before relying on them. He is also associated with UNICEF USA.
Public Policy Work
Hohns has written publicly about Bitcoin-enhanced treasury bonds as a policy proposal; this is a proposal, not an adopted government program.
