Where the Money Went
The single largest recipient over 15 years has been Wayland Union Schools, which has received more than $25.68 million. The district put the funding toward tangible needs: purchasing more than 19 buses, expanding student support services, providing elementary supplies and student technology, employing a school nurse and a district safety officer, installing a fine-arts sound system, covering preschool costs, buying fitness-center equipment, and more. Other major beneficiaries include Wayland Township ($10.46 million), Allegan County ($10.4 million), and the Allegan Area Educational Service Agency ($4.78 million). Several neighboring communities — the City of Wayland, Martin Township, Hopkins Township, Dorr Township, Yankee Springs Township, and Leighton Township — each received approximately $474,377.

Beyond governmental and school distributions, the Gun Lake Tribe Wayland Area Local Revenue Sharing Board has allocated more than $4.15 million to cover operational costs for Wayland Area Emergency Medical Services, Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies, Wayland Township deputies, and related administrative expenses. For 2026, the Local Revenue Sharing Board received $2.57 million, while Gun Lake Investments (GLIMI) — the Tribe’s non-gaming economic development entity, overseen jointly by Tribal and State representatives — received $1.69 million. Another distribution scheduled later this year will also provide funding to the State of Michigan.
Growth That Fuels the Giving
Tribal leaders tie the rising community payments directly to reinvestment in the property. “We’re incredibly proud to be able to provide these funds to deserving local organizations such as schools, governments and charitable organizations,” said Gun Lake Tribal Chairman Bob Peters, crediting the casino team and “all of the expansions we have made to the property over the past 15 years, such as the addition of the Hotel, Spa and Oasis in 2025.” That most recent phase was a roughly $300 million expansion, opening in 2025, that added a 252-room, 16-story luxury hotel with 31 suites, the MnoYé Spa, new dining, and the Wawyé Oasis — a 32,000-square-foot tropical glass atrium with multiple pools and thousands of live plants. Today the property offers about 2,300 slot machines, more than 50 table games, a poker room, a sportsbook, and keno.
About the Gun Lake Tribe
The casino is owned by the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi — the Gun Lake Tribe — whose ancestors signed treaties with the United States dating back to 1795 and who were re-affirmed to federal recognition in 1999. The Bradley Indian Mission near Wayland is the historic cultural center of the tribal community. Located off Exit 61 on U.S. 131, roughly halfway between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Gun Lake Casino opened its first phase in 2011 and has grown into one of Michigan’s premier gaming and entertainment destinations — a trajectory that has steadily enlarged its economic footprint in the region.
