Overview

The Trezor Safe 5 is Trezor’s flagship hardware wallet, pairing a vibrant 1.54″ color touchscreen with the Trezor Touch haptic engine for the most intuitive cold-storage experience in the Trezor line. Listed at USD 129 (frequently on sale around $103), it is built on a decade of open-source security and is offered in three finishes — Black Graphite, Green Beryl and Violet Ore — with a Bitcoin-only variant available for purists.

Security is anchored by an NDA-free EAL6+ Secure Element — one of the very few wallets that combines a certified secure element with fully open-source firmware and hardware design, so the entire security stack can be independently audited. PIN and passphrase are entered on the device, so your secret is never typed on a potentially compromised computer. A scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 3 surface, tamper-evident casing, and packaging seals protect physical integrity, while the new 20-word wallet backup standard lets you start with a Standard Single-share Backup and upgrade in place to an Advanced Multi-share Backup for stronger recovery protection.

The Safe 5 connects via USB-C and integrates with the full Trezor Suite ecosystem — desktop and mobile apps for sending, receiving, trading, staking, portfolio tracking and coin control — as well as supported third-party wallet apps, so you’re never locked into Trezor’s software. With support for 1000s of coins and tokens, FIDO2 two-factor authentication, and Tor-based privacy, the Safe 5 is positioned as Trezor’s premium device for users who want open-source transparency and a touch-first experience.

Pros

  • Most intuitive Trezor yet — 1.54" color touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3 and Trezor Touch haptic feedback
  • Rare NDA-free EAL6+ Secure Element paired with fully open-source firmware and hardware
  • PIN and passphrase entered on-device — secrets never typed on a computer
  • Tamper-evident casing and packaging seals to detect interception
  • New 20-word Advanced Multi-share Backup with in-place upgrade from a Standard backup
  • Supports 1000s of coins & tokens, with a dedicated Bitcoin-only variant
  • Full Trezor Suite + third-party wallet compatibility — no vendor lock-in
  • FIDO2 2FA key, Tor privacy and coin control built into Trezor Suite
  • Premium PC-ABS + anodized-aluminum build in three colorways

Cons

  • USB-C only — not air-gapped; the device connects by cable for signing (use QR wallets like Keystone or SafePal S1 Pro for true air-gap)
  • No Bluetooth, so mobile pairing on Android needs a USB-C OTG cable
  • List price $129 is the most expensive mainstream Trezor (often on sale ~$103)
  • Staking is managed in Trezor Suite, not directly on the device
  • iOS currently does not allow swap, send, setup or device management — pair on desktop first
  • Touchscreen is compact and passcode entry can feel cramped for some users

Security Architecture

Secure Element

  • NDA-free EAL6+ Secure Element — a certified secure element whose design is fully auditable, rare among EAL6+ wallets (most are under NDA).
  • Stores and signs with the seed phrase; the secure element defends against both online and offline physical attacks.

Open-Source Security

  • Fully open-source firmware and hardware design — transparent, auditable and community-reviewed, consistent with Trezor’s decade-long open-source ethos.
  • No proprietary security libraries; security through transparency rather than obscurity.

Entry & Physical Protections

  • PIN and passphrase entered on the device — your secret is never typed on a potentially compromised computer.
  • Tamper-evident casing and protective packaging seals so you can verify the device hasn’t been intercepted.
  • Gorilla Glass 3 screen, and firmware anti-tampering validation.

Authentication

  • FIDO2 standard — doubles as a universal two-factor authentication (U2F/FIDO2) security key for compatible services.
  • No KYC and no account required to use the wallet.

About SatoshiLabs (Czech)

Trezor is the hardware-wallet brand of SatoshiLabs, founded in 2013 in Prague, Czech Republic. In 2014 Trezor shipped the world’s first Bitcoin hardware wallet, the Trezor One, and has remained the reference name in open-source cold storage ever since.

The Safe 5 is the latest flagship in Trezor’s lineup (following the Safe 3 and the original Trezor Model T), introducing a color touchscreen, Gorilla Glass 3, the Trezor Touch haptic engine, and the new 20-word Advanced Multi-share Backup standard. Trezor’s security philosophy is distinct from most competitors: the entire firmware and hardware design are open-source and auditable, and even its Secure Element is NDA-free — meaning independent researchers can verify the full security stack rather than trusting a closed black box. The device earns a 4.8/5 rating from verified buyers on trezor.io.
