Overview

The Ledger Nano X is Ledger’s iconic Bluetooth-enabled hardware wallet, designed for investors who want to manage thousands of cryptocurrencies from a phone, tablet or desktop. Priced at $99, it remains the volume seller in Ledger’s line — above the entry-level Nano S Plus and below the premium Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex — and is widely regarded as the benchmark consumer hardware wallet since its 2019 launch.

Security rests on Ledger’s dual-chip architecture: a certified CC EAL5+ Secure Element stores and signs with the seed, Ledger OS™ powers the device, and a Trusted Display means every transaction is reviewed and approved on the device’s own screen. The Secure Element is audited (incl. a publicly disclosed ANSSI audit of the Ledger Nano X) and isolates keys from the general-purpose MCU, so even a compromised host computer cannot extract the seed.

The defining feature is built-in Bluetooth, letting you pair the Nano X wirelessly with iOS and Android phones via the Ledger Wallet™ app — no OTG cable required — alongside USB-C for desktop. Through Ledger Wallet you can send, receive, buy, swap, trade and stake across 100+ chains and 5,500+ coins and tokens, with integrated partner providers, live P&L insights, market alerts, an Earn Simulator and optional services like Ledger Recover™ for seed backup. The result is a portable, phone-first cold wallet that balances strong Secure-Element security with day-to-day usability.

Pros

  • Built-in Bluetooth — pairs wirelessly with iOS and Android phones, plus USB-C for desktop
  • CC EAL5+ Secure Element + Ledger OS™ + Trusted Display — audited dual-chip security
  • Supports 5,500+ coins & tokens across 100+ chains via Ledger Wallet
  • Mobile-first app with live P&L, market alerts, Earn Simulator and 50+ integrated providers
  • Buy / swap / trade / stake / earn without leaving the app; seed stays offline
  • Compact, pocketable USB-dongle at an accessible $99 price
  • Optional Ledger Recover™ subscription for encrypted seed backup
  • No KYC required; open-source Ledger OS apps

Cons

  • Not air-gapped — connects by Bluetooth/USB-C rather than QR scanning
  • Bluetooth expands the wireless attack surface (mitigated by Secure Element + on-device display)
  • No touchscreen — two-button navigation with a small display
  • Ledger Recover is an optional paid subscription and has been controversial in the community
  • Proprietary Secure Element design (NDA-encumbered), less transparent than Trezor's open-source approach
  • Limited coin apps can be installed simultaneously compared with larger-screen devices

Features & Benefits

Connectivity & Portability

  • Built-in Bluetooth — wirelessly pair with iOS and Android phones, or connect to desktop via USB-C (cable included).
  • On-the-go mobile experience — manage assets anywhere through the Ledger Wallet™ mobile app.
  • Compact USB-dongle form factor with Onyx Black finish and an integrated lanyard loop.

Asset & Ecosystem Support

  • 5,500+ coins & tokens across 100+ chains — Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Solana and many more, all manageable from Ledger Wallet.
  • 50+ top providers integrated for buying, swapping, trading and earning — including MoonPay and other on/off-ramps.
  • Staking & yield via Ledger Live / Earn: stake Ethereum, Solana, Cosmos and more directly from the app; the device signs while keys stay offline.
  • Live P&L insights, market alerts and an Earn Simulator to model portfolio growth; Cash-to-Stablecoin and Stablecoin Yield strategies available.

App Intelligence

  • Ledger Wallet™ centralizes send, receive, buy, trade and earn with a single secure app.
  • Ledger Recover™ (optional paid subscription) — Shamir-based, encrypted seed backup so you can recover access if your recovery phrase is lost.

Security Architecture

Dual-Chip Architecture

  • CC EAL5+ Secure Element (ST33J2M0) — isolates and stores the seed phrase; the certified chip defends against physical and side-channel attacks.
  • Ledger OS™ — Ledger’s dedicated operating system that runs applets on the Secure Element; apps are sandboxed so a compromised coin app cannot touch another.
  • Trusted Display — every transaction recipient and amount is shown on the device’s own screen; nothing signs without your physical button confirmation.

Audits & Transparency

  • Audited by ANSSI (French cybersecurity agency) and ChainSecurity, with findings publicly disclosed.
  • Continuous hall-of-fame bounty program and a community of independent researchers reviewing Ledger OS apps.

Device Security

  • PIN and optional passphrase protect device access; the seed is generated and stored entirely on the Secure Element.
  • Only you approve transactions — the host computer/app can prepare a transaction but cannot sign on your behalf.
  • No KYC required; no account needed to use the wallet as cold storage.

About Ledger (France)

Ledger was founded in 2014 in Paris, France, by a group of security engineers with backgrounds in embedded security, cryptocurrency and IoT. Ledger is best known for creating the world’s most popular hardware wallet — the Ledger Nano series — and for developing its own secure operating system, Ledger OS™, designed specifically for cryptographic-asset custody.

Today Ledger’s consumer line ranges from the Nano S Plus (entry USB) and Nano X ($99, Bluetooth) to the premium Ledger Stax ($399, curved E Ink touchscreen) and Ledger Flex ($249). The company also offers enterprise-grade custody via Ledger Enterprise and the optional Ledger Recover™ subscription. Units are assembled and certified in Europe with CE, RoHS and FCC approvals, and Ledger has sold millions of devices to retail and institutional users worldwide.
