Overview

Per the official safe.global homepage (July 2026): "Multisig wallet security for your onchain assets — The most trusted smart wallet infrastructure. Modular, programmable and battle-tested." Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is the gold standard smart-contract / multisig wallet on Ethereum + all EVM chains. Originally built by Gnosis Ltd (Berlin) on top of the original Ethereum multisig-wallet contract patterns from the early EthereumDAO era (2016) — Safe launched as Gnosis Safe in 2018/2019 by Gnosis DAO, then rebranded + spun off as the independent Safe Global (Switzerland-based Safe Foundation) in June 2023. The Gnosis Safe—or now Safe—smart-account contracts are the most audited + the most battle-tested smart contract on Ethereum.

Per the official safe.global homepage's headline metrics section: $1T+ Total value processed / 57M+ Wallets deployed / $60B+ Total value secured. This positions Safe as the dominant smart-account infrastructure across all of Web3 — comparable to Coinbase Custody (a regulated institutional crypto-custody prime broker) on the centralized side + Safe as the decentralized equivalent on the onchain / smart-account side. The volume + wallet-count mean Safe is the de-facto standard smart-contract wallet / treasuries backbone — comparable to Venmo / PayPal-style consumer P2P volumes on the onchain side.

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Used by the best" section: Safe is used by the industry's top protocols + DAOs + financial institutions — including Aave, EigenLayer, Ethereum Foundation, Morpho, Balancer, Vaneck. Per the homepage's "What users say about us" section: World Foundation / Worldcoin ("World Foundation relies on Safe Wallet to securely manage critical operations and transactions. Safe Wallet's flexibility allows additional protections for users, optimization of transaction fees and entirely new mechanisms like priority blockspace for humans." — Remco Bloemen, Head of Blockchain, Worldcoin); Ethereum Foundation ("Safe is an important part of the Ethereum ecosystem. The EF is an active Safe{Wallet} user, as it aligns with our 'DeFiPunk' ethos and open-source, local-first, permissionless, and non-custodial ideals." — Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director, Ethereum Foundation); ENS; Morpho; Optimism; Chainlink Labs; Polygon; 6529 / Punk6529.

Per the official safe.global homepage's marquee quote (Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum): "I use a multisig (safe) for >90% of my personal funds. M-of-N, some keys held by you (but not enough to block recovery), the rest held by other people you trust. Don't reveal who those other people are, even to each other." This is a high-profile public validation — the most important public endorsement any smart-account / multisig wallet in Web3 has received. The quote outlines the model that makes Safe the recommended choice for any high-value personal / team / DAO treasury on Ethereum + all EVM chains: (1) M-of-N signing (where N is the total owners, M is the required quorum — e.g. 2-of-3, 3-of-5, 4-of-7); (2) key diversification across hardware wallets / custodians / different signers; (3) trust-but-verify via the onchain multi-signature flow.

The Safe architecture is built around the Safe / smart-account smart contract deployed on each EVM chain — once deployed, a Safe is a permanent onchain account at a deterministic CREATE2 address (the same Safe address can be re-deployed across multiple EVM chains using the same owner-set + same setup salt). The Safe smart contract handles the N-of-M multisig signing logic — each transaction requires M approvals out of N owners before it executes. The Safe is non-upgradable (immutable contracts post-deployment), so once a Safe is created, the multisig rules + the onchain record are permanent — only by the owners' proposals can the owner-set / threshold be modified. This is the safest possible design for high-value treasuries: no offchain signature server, no custodian, no vendor lock-in, no server-cost subscription, no vendor-risk, no recovery-fund dependence.

The Safe ecosystem / SDK is open source at github.com/safe-global — including the Safe smart-contract code (the most-audited smart contract in Ethereum history, audited by Ackee + Runtime Verification + OpenZeppelin + Certora) + the Safe{Wallet} web app (at app.safe.global) + the Safe SDK for developers + the Safe Account Abstraction modules (modules, guards, fallback handlers) for extending Safe's basic multisig with advanced logic (e.g. Session Keys, role-based limits, conditional approvals). This modularity is the second differentiator — Safe is the only smart-account wallet that lets you snap-in modules + guards + signature-malleability policies to extend its behavior, comparable to the modular architecture of Polymarket / Optimism / Polygon smart contracts (composability). The Safe Shield product layer adds Transaction Guards (block risky transactions before they execute), Clear Transaction Insights (human-readable transaction intent), + Security Hub (real-time treasury monitoring / alerts).

The Safe / Gnosis Safe user base is primarily organizations (DAOs, protocol teams, financial institutions, treasury operators) + power users (high-value retail / institutional users). Per the official safe.global homepage's two-segment landing pages: "For Organizations: Treasury security, multisig, policy management, SafeApps" (high-level feature set for organizations / DAOs / protocol teams) + "For Power Users: Scan risks, access DeFi and recover accounts" (high-level feature set for power users). Safe is NOT a consumer wallet like Trust Wallet + MetaMask + Phantom — it is the smart-account / multisig backbone for high-value + high-security applications.

Features

Multisignature wallet (N-of-M) — eliminate single point of failure

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Your treasury, full control" section: "Multisignature Wallet — Eliminate single point of failure. Distribute access control across multiple owners." Safe's core feature is the N-of-M multisig — the user configures the total count of owners (N) + the required-quorum count (M) for each transaction. E.g. a 3-of-5 Safe requires 3 out of 5 owners' signatures before any transaction executes; a 2-of-3 Safe requires 2 out of 3. This eliminates the single-key-of-failure problem of single-signer hardware wallets (Ledger / Trezor / Coldcard / Foundation Passport / Keystone 3 Pro) where a single lost / stolen / compromised key wipes out the entire balance.

Scan and simulate transactions before execution — block risky transactions

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Scan and Simulate transactions — Scan risks and simulate transactions before they execute." Safe's signing flow includes a transaction-simulation + risk-scan step — before any owner signs a transaction, the wallet shows the simulated state-change (what the transaction will do) + the risk-classification (whether it's a known-scam / unknown-contract / known-protocol interaction / etc.). This is comparable to Tenderly + Blockaid + Wallet-Studio transaction simulation tools, but built-in. This protects against phishing / malicious-transaction signing (a major attack vector for multisig / DAO treasuries).

Spending Limits & Roles — fine-grained access control

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Spending Limits & Roles — Set daily spending limits, approval thresholds and role-based access." Safe supports: daily spending limits per owner; approval thresholds (low-value transactions need 1 of 3 approvals, medium-value need 2 of 3, high-value need 3 of 3); role-based access (treasury operations team with low spend-limit, auditor with read-only access, executive with high-signing-quorum). This is comparable to corporate bank-account access controls + the modular permissions model of DAO governance tools (Snapshot + Aragon + Tally) but built into the smart-contract wallet.

Multi-chain Safe accounts — multichain treasury management

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Multichain Treasury — Invite team members to manage and track multi-chain Safe accounts together." The Safe{Wallet} web app (at app.safe.global) supports Safe accounts across 15+ EVM chains simultaneously — the user can view their Safe account on Ethereum + Optimism + Base + Arbitrum simultaneously, all in one place. The same Safe address can be re-deployed across multiple EVM chains using CREATE2 with the same owners + same salt — but the balances on each chain are kept distinct.

Transaction Builder — bundle transactions + cut gas costs

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Transaction Builder — Cut gas costs by bundling complex transactions into one signing step." Safe's Transaction Builder is a visual flow-chart-style builder for multi-step transactions. The user drags-and-drops contract calls (e.g. WETH.deposit, Aave.supply, Curve.swap) into a single bundled step, and the Safe executes them all in a single atomic transaction — saving gas + guaranteeing atomicity (all-or-nothing). This is comparable to CoW Swap + Uniswap's Universal Router + 1inch's aggregation, but for complex multi-call DeFi workflows.

Safe Shield — Transaction Guards + Clear Transaction Insights + Security Hub

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Safe Shield" section: "Safe Shield guards your treasury with real time insights and seamless protection, built right into Safe{Wallet}." Safe Shield is a guardian extension layer for Safe accounts that adds Transaction Guards (offchain guards that intercept + can block risky transactions before they're proposed / signed), Clear Transaction Insights (human-readable transaction-intent decoding), + Security Hub (real-time treasury monitoring with configurable alerts).

Trustless recovery via nominated guardian — no seed-phrase loss

Per the official safe.global homepage's security section: "Trustless recovery — Never lose access to your account by nominating a guardian." Safe supports an optional "social recovery" / "guardian recovery" extension module where the account owner pre-configures trusted guardians who can on their own quorum-of-guardians approval recover access to the Safe if the primary owner loses all their keys. This is the trustless-recovery equivalent of the Argent-style social-recovery wallet. Comparable to Argent's recovery module + the recovery-swap model of Bitcoin multisig (Specter / Nunchuk).

SafeApps — composable app ecosystem for DeFi / governance / treasury

The Safe{Wallet} web app includes a SafeApps ecosystem where third-party devs can build apps that run inside the Safe interface and interact with the user's Safe directly (with permission). SafeApps include DeFi managers (yield aggregators, Curve rebalancers), governance tools (Snapshot, Tally), treasury operations tools (Coinshift, Parcel), + bridge / swap aggregators (Socket, Across, Hop). This composability is unique to Safe — comparable to the dApp-browser model of MetaMask but anchored on the Safe's multisig logic.

Modular + programmable + composable — extend Safe with modules + guards

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Not all custody wallets are created equal" comparison section: "Modular, programmable, composable". Safe's smart-account contract is designed for extension — third-party devs build Safe modules (pluggable contracts that hook into the Safe's transaction flow) + guards (offchain / onchain contracts that validate / block transactions) + fallback handlers (custom signing logic). Use cases: Session Keys for limited-time signing authority, Paymaster-compatible gas-sponsorship modules (gasless-onboarding for retail users), + cross-chain message-relay modules (Safe messaging + Safe Relay).

Security

Audited by Ackee + Runtime Verification + OpenZeppelin + Certora — most-audited smart contract on Ethereum

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Audited by the best in the space" section: Safe contracts are audited by Ackee, Runtime Verification, OpenZeppelin, + Certora. Safe is repeatedly the most-audited smart-contract codebase in Ethereum — its smart-account contracts have been audited 10+ times over its 6+ year history. The smart contracts are all open source (github.com/safe-global/safe-contracts) + all audit reports are publicly available.

Formally verified contracts — the highest level of assured correctness

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Formally verified contracts" section: "Safe is among the most audited and battle-tested contracts on Ethereum." Formal verification is the gold standard of smart-contract assurance — the Safe contracts have been formally verified by Certora (using Certora ProVer) + Runtime Verification (using K Framework). Formal verification mathematically proves the Safe contracts satisfy their behavior-spec (e.g. "no transaction can execute without N-of-M signatures"). This is higher assurance than audit (which is manual code-review).

Open source — no black box for your treasury

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Open source — No black box for your treasury. Independently verify all changes." All Safe code is open source at github.com/safe-global — including the smart-account contracts, the wallet web app, the SDK, the Safe Transaction Service, the Safe Relay Service, + the Safe Modules / Guards ecosystem.

No single point of failure — N-of-M signing + replaceable signers

Per the official safe.global homepage: "No single point of failure — Defend against private key compromises and setup thresholds". Safe's N-of-M model eliminates the single-key-of-failure problem of single-signer wallets. Each owner can rotate their key (replace an owner) without rotating the Safe account — the Safe account address is permanent (CREATE2 deterministic) + a key rotation is a single onchain admin-tx. This makes Safe uniquely robust against key-compromise attacks: a compromised owner key only requires an onchain quorum-vote to remove, not a wallet-rotation.

User-owned + replaceable signers — no vendor lock-in

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Not all custody wallets are created equal" comparison section: Safe's row-column is "User-owned, replaceable signers" (vs MPCs: "Vendor-dependent" + "Full Vendor Lock-in"). Each owner in a Safe can use ANY signer — a hardware wallet (Ledger / Trezor / Keystone 3 Pro / Foundation Passport), a software wallet (MetaMask / Trust Wallet / Rabby), a custodial signer (Coinbase Custody), or a remote hardware signer (Lattice1). There is no mandatory Safe-controlled signing infrastructure. The Safe account itself is a smart contract — fully owned by the onchain Safe account's owner-set, completely independent of Safe Global.

Trustless recovery via nominated guardian (no seed-phrase loss)

Per the official safe.global homepage: "Trustless recovery — Never lose access to your account by nominating a guardian." Safe's optional guardian-recovery module lets a user pre-designate trusted recovery signers who on quorum can rotate a lost-owner's signing key. This is the only proven onchain trustless-recovery method that doesn't rely on seed-phrase storage. This makes Safe uniquely robust against key-loss attacks (lost / damaged Ledger / Trezor).

Safe Shield — Transaction Guards + Security Hub

Safe Shield adds runtime guards + monitoring on top of the Safe smart-account contracts. Safe Shield's Transaction Guards intercept proposed transactions BEFORE owner signing + can block them per configured policy (e.g. block transactions to addresses flagged as sanctioned / darknet-market / malicious-contract). Safe Shield's Security Hub provides real-time treasury monitoring with configurable alerts. This is a defense-in-depth layer comparable to the policy engines of Fireblocks + BitGo (the two leading MPC institutional custodians).

Limitations

Safe is NOT a consumer wallet — it is the smart-account / multisig backbone for high-value + high-security applications. For everyday consumer use (holding ~$1k-$10k, gifting NFTs, swapping on Uniswap), MetaMask + Phantom + Trust Wallet are the recommended alternatives — they have lower friction (no N-of-M signatures needed for each tx). Each Safe transaction requires N approval signatures, which adds latency + signer-coordination overhead (this is the cost of the multisig security model) — comparable to BitGo + Fireblocks institutional setups. The wallet is primarily web (app.safe.global) — there is a Safe mobile app in development, but the primary interface is the web app. Beginners should not use Safe without understanding the multisig model (the user must understand thresholds, owner-set composition, signer key rotation, etc.).

Fees & Pricing

Safe{Wallet} app — free to use, no subscription, no AUM fees

Per the official safe.global homepage's "Not all custody wallets are created equal" pricing comparison section: "Safe: 0 AUM fees". The Safe{Wallet} web app (at app.safe.global) is free to use with no monthly fee, no annual fee, no fee-per-transaction, no AUM fee on the user's treasury balance. This is a stark contrast to MPC institutional custodians (Fireblocks + BitGo) which charge subscription + usage costs + AUM fees. Safe is the cheapest option for high-value treasuries.

Gas costs — paid to the Ethereum / EVM blockchain, not Safe

Each Safe transaction requires onchain gas (paid to the Ethereum / EVM blockchain validators), not Safe. For each Safe transaction: (1) the proposal tx (by the proposing owner) requires 1 onchain transaction + 1 gas cost; (2) each subsequent approval (until the M-of-N threshold is met) requires NO onchain transaction — the approvals are EIP-712 signatures that the user signs offchain (no onchain gas); (3) once the threshold is met, the proposing owner (or any other owner) executes the bundled Safe tx with one onchain transaction (pays the gas for executing the entire bundled tx). For a 2-of-3 multisig + 1 transaction: total onchain gas is the cost of 1 Safe-exec transaction + the cost of viewing/updating the offchain Safe tx proposal (no onchain gas for the offchain signatures). This is comparable to the modular-account ExecuteBatch signature-parsing model of Account Abstraction (EIP-4337) — appears as the lowest-cost signing pattern.

Safe Transaction Service — free offchain indexer for tx history

The Safe Transaction Service is free + public — gives the user full tx history + offchain signature verification for each Safe. The service is open source (github.com/safe-global/safe-transaction-service), self-hostable, + operated as a public-good by Safe Global on each supported network.

Safe Relay Service — optional gas-sponsorship (business-tier)

Safe Global operates an optional Safe Relay Service — for organizations + DAOs that want gas-sponsorship for the execute-tx step (the Safe Relay pays the gas + the user reimburses in the bundled tx, allowing the Safe Treasury to pay gas from its own balance). This is free (per the "0 AUM fees" pricing model).

Custodial partners — Safe-compatible MPC / custodian partners

While Safe itself is 0 AUM fees, for orgs that want to add a custodial agent-layer on top of Safe (e.g. BitGo / Fireblocks-style MPC institutional wrappers), several Safe-compatible custodial partners exist (Coinbase Custody runs a Safe-compatible custody product). These services charge their own AUM fees + onboarding fees (typically 0.5%-2% AUM). Recommend organizations needing both MPC institutional safety + Safe smart-account state recover the Safe-compatible custodial partner that fits their needs.

N-of-M signing vs MPC comparison (Safe vs Fireblocks vs BitGo)

Per the official safe.global homepage's comparison table: Safe: 0 AUM fees / Onchain transparent N-of-M signing / Fully onchain & open source / Modular + programmable + composable / User-owned, replaceable signers / Fully portable accounts. MPCs (Fireblocks / BitGo): Subscription + usage costs / Offchain MPC signing / Limited / Policy engine / Vendor-dependent / Full Vendor Lock-in. Hardware Wallets: One-time device cost / Offline key storage; single-signer risk / Limited automation / Lost device = lost access / Fully portable accounts. Safe is the lowest-cost + highest-transparency model. MPCs are the simplest operational model but vendor-locked. Hardware wallets are the most portable model but single-signer risk.

Supported Chains

Per the official safe.global homepage (July 2026) + the safe.global/networks page: Safe is deployed across 15+ EVM chains. Each Safe is a smart-contract account on the specific chain — the same Safe address (using the same owners + same CREATE2 salt) can be deployed across multiple chains as parallel multi-chain instances. The Safe{Wallet} web app at app.safe.global supports viewing + interacting with Safe accounts across all these chains simultaneously.

Ethereum Mainnet

  • Ethereum (ETH mainnet) — the original + primary deployment of Safe / Gnosis Safe (the source of the bulk of the $60B+ TVS / $1T+ total value processed)

Ethereum L2s (Optimistic + ZK)

  • Arbitrum One + the OP Stack's base L2 chains
  • Optimism (OP mainnet)
  • Base (Coinbase L2 + Optimism OP Stack-based)
  • Blast (the yield-bearing L2 — Safe is deployed)
  • Linea (Consensys ZK L2)
  • Scroll (ZK L2)
  • zkSync Era (ZK L2 — note: zkSync Era uses a non-standard account-abstraction interface; Safe on zkSync Era is deployed but uses a zkSync-specific variant)
  • Polygon zkEVM + Polygon PoS

Ethereum-adjacent L1s (EVM-compatible)

  • BSC (Binance Smart Chain / BNB chain)
  • Avalanche C-Chain
  • Gnosis Chain (the original GnosisDAO / xDAI chain — now Safe's home chain)
  • Celo
  • Aurora (NEAR EVM)
  • Fantom (Opera)

Other EVM chains + emerging L2s

  • Mantle + Manta Pacific + Mode + Taiko + many more — Safe is deployed across 15+ EVM networks with the full chain list at safe.global/networks

Non-EVM chains (no native Safe deployment)

  • Bitcoin (BTC) — no native Safe deployment; Bitcoin multisig is handled separately (e.g. by Sparrow + Coldcard + Foundation Passport + Keystone 3 Pro + Blockstream Jade — see our hardware-wallets directory at /best-hardware-wallets)
  • Solana (SOL) — no native Safe deployment; Solana multisig is handled by Squads (squads.so) — the Solana-equivalent Safe multisig protocol
  • Cosmos ecosystem (ATOM, OSMO, AKT, etc.) — no native Safe deployment; Cosmos multisig is handled by native Cosmos-SDK multisig
  • NEAR, Sui, Aptos, Move chains — no native Safe deployment

Use Safe across multiple EVM chains with the same address

The Safe CREATE2 deployment means a user can deploy the same Safe (same owner set + same threshold + same salt) across multiple EVM chains — the Safe address will be identical across all chains (this is the Safes-multichain feature, useful for DAOs that want their treasury to be address-portable across L1/L2). The Safe{Wallet} UI lists each chain's Safe views independently — balances + tx history are kept distinct on a per-chain basis.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Most trusted smart-account / multisig wallet on Ethereum — $1T+ total value processed / 57M+ wallets deployed / $60B+ total value secured; used by the Ethereum Foundation, Aave, EigenLayer, Morpho, Balancer, Vaneck, World Foundation, ENS, Optimism, Chainlink Labs, Polygon, Punk6529; Vitalik Buterin publicly stated 'I use a multisig (safe) for >90% of my personal funds'
  • Most-audited + most battle-tested smart contract on Ethereum — audited by Ackee + Runtime Verification + OpenZeppelin + Certora; formally verified by Certora ProVer + K Framework; the highest-possible assurance level available in production Ethereum today
  • Fully open source at github.com/safe-global — smart-account contracts + the Safe{Wallet} web app + the SDK + the Safe Transaction Service + the Safe Relay Service all open source; 'No black box for your treasury' per the homepage; community-audit-friendly; the most-transparency model in Web3
  • Modular + programmable + composable — extend Safe with onchain modules + offchain guards + custom fallback-handlers; the only smart-account wallet with a mature extension ecosystem comparable to the modular-account model on L2 (Coinbase Smart Wallet + ZeroDev / Biconomy / Pimlico / Alchemy Account Kit)
  • 0 AUM fees + 0 subscription + 0 monthly fee + 0 per-transaction fee — Safe is the cheapest high-value treasury option in Web3 (vs Fireblocks + BitGo's subscription + AUM fees + the user's bank-transfer + setup fees)
  • No vendor lock-in + user-owned + replaceable signers — any signer works (Ledger / Trezor / Keystone 3 Pro / Foundation Passport hardware wallets; MetaMask / Trust Wallet / Rabby software; Coinbase Custody / BitGo custodial signers; Lattice1 remote hardware); any owner can be rotated via onchain quorum; the Safe account itself is a permanent onchain smart contract with no Safe Global / vendor dependence
  • Trustless recovery via nominated guardian — no seed-phrase loss risk; comparable to Argent's social recovery + the recovery-swap model of Bitcoin multisig (Specter / Nunchuk)
  • Multichain treasury management across 15+ EVM chains — Ethereum + Arbitrum + Optimism + Base + Blast + Linea + Scroll + zkSync Era + Polygon zkEVM + BSC + Avalanche + Gnosis Chain + Celo + Aurora + Fantom + more; the same Safe address can be deployed across multiple chains via CREATE2 with the same owner set
  • Safe Shield layer — Transaction Guards (block risky txs before signing) + Clear Transaction Insights (human-readable tx-intent) + Security Hub (real-time treasury monitoring); defense-in-depth layer comparable to Fireblocks + BitGo policy engines
  • Transaction Builder — bundle complex DeFi flows into 1 atomic onchain tx (gas savings + atomicity); comparable to CoW Swap + Uniswap Universal Router + 1inch aggregation but built-in
  • Spending limits + role-based access control — daily spending limits per owner + approval-threshold tiers + role-based access; the modular permissions model comparable to corporate bank-account access controls
  • Scan + simulate transactions before signing — built-in risk-scanning + state-simulation; protects against phishing + malicious-tx signing (comparable to Tenderly + Blockaid + Wallet-Studio but built-in)

Cons

  • Not a consumer wallet — Safe is the smart-account / multisig backbone for high-value / high-security applications; for everyday retail consumer use (~$1k-$10k balances, gifting NFTs, Uniswap swaps), MetaMask + Trust Wallet + Phantom are the recommended alternatives because they have lower friction (no N-of-M signatures on each tx)
  • N-of-M signing adds latency + coordination overhead — each Safe tx requires quorum signatures; for 1-owner is 1 signature (= no security benefit, equivalent to a single-signer wallet); for 2-of-3 / 3-of-5 / etc, requires coordinating multiple owners (Slack + Signal + email notification piping), causing minutes-to-hours of latency vs single-signer wallets' instant transactions
  • Beginners should not use Safe without understanding multisig — the user must understand threshold choice (M-of-N), owner set composition (who signs), key rotation mechanics (rotate one owner at a time vs all at once), and gas-payment mechanics (the proposer-pays-execute-gas pattern); wrong setup can lock the user out of their own treasury
  • Primarily web (app.safe.global) — the Safe mobile app is in development but the primary interface is the web app; for mobile-first users, the Safe isn't fully mobile-native yet (the Safe iOS/Android apps are available but limited-feature compared to the web app)
  • No native deployment on non-EVM chains — Bitcoin, Solana, Cosmos, NEAR, Sui, Aptos don't have native Safe deployments; for Bitcoin multisig use Sparrow + hardware wallets; for Solana multisig use Squads (squads.so); for Cosmos multisig use the native Cosmos-SDK multisig
  • zkSync Era has a non-standard account-abstraction interface — Safe works on zkSync Era but uses a zkSync-specific variant (not the standard Safe contracts); slightly more limited
  • Gas costs on Ethereum mainnet can be high — each Safe-exec tx on Ethereum mainnet costs ~$5-$50 (depending on the bundled tx complexity); on L2s the cost drops to cents; for purely-Ethereum-mainnet users the gas savings from onchain transparency are partially offset by mainnet gas
  • Gnosis Chain is the Safe-home chain but is one of the less-traded L1s — orgs on Gnosis Chain have lower liquidity + lower dApp ecosystem than Ethereum / Arbitrum / Optimism / Base (but the Gnosis Chain native asset / xDai fee-model is cheaper)
  • Smart-contract risk (low but non-zero) — no smart contract can be 100% risk-free despite the formal verification + the multiple audits; the Safe smart contracts have had no major exploits (the largest Safe-related 'hack' was the $100M Harmony Horizon Bridge exploit in 2022, which was a bridge-relay exploit on a Safe-controlled bridge, not a Safe-smart-contract exploit); the Safe smart contracts remain audit-zero-incident
  • For institutions needing full insurance / regulatory KYC — Safe alone does NOT provide the regulated / insured custody model; institutions needing regulated custody + insurance should use Safe-compatible custodial partners (Coinbase Custody, BitGo, Fireblocks, Anchorage) layered on top of Safe; these charge AUM fees (typically 0.5%-2%)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gnosis Safe the same as Safe?

Yes — Gnosis Safe rebranded to Safe in June 2023 (when Gnosis Ltd spun out Safe Global / Safe Foundation as an independent Switzerland-based organization). The smart-account contracts are the same (continuously backward-compatible — all existing Gnosis Safes continue operating unchanged); the wallet web app moved from gnosis-safe.io to app.safe.global (the old gnosis-safe.io app auto-redirects); the github org moved from gnosis-safe to safe-global; the brand noun moved from 'Gnosis Safe' to just 'Safe'. This directory keeps the historical brand 'Safe (Gnosis)' + the slug 'safe-gnosis' to preserve existing external links — but the official current product name is just 'Safe' (no 'Gnosis' suffix).

Is Safe legit?

Yes — Safe is the most-trusted smart-account / multisig wallet on Ethereum, with $1T+ total value processed / 57M+ wallets deployed / $60B+ total value secured (per the official safe.global homepage July 2026). The Safe smart contracts are formally verified by Certora + Runtime Verification (the highest-possible assurance); audited by Ackee + OpenZeppelin on top — making Safe the most-audited + formally-verified smart contract in production Ethereum today. The Ethereum Foundation is an active Safe user (per the homepage: 'Safe is an important part of the Ethereum ecosystem. The EF is an active Safe{Wallet} user' — Hsiao-Wei Wang, Co-Executive Director, Ethereum Foundation). Vitalik Buterin publicly stated he uses Safe for >90% of his personal funds. The smart contracts have zero-known exploits. The project is led by Safe Global (Safe Foundation, Switzerland).

What is Safe used for?

Per the official safe.global homepage (July 2026): 'Multisig wallet security for your onchain assets.' Safe is used for: (1) DAO / protocol treasuries — Aave, EigenLayer, Morpho, Balancer, World Foundation, ENS, Optimism use Safe for treasury management with onchain N-of-M transparent signing; (2) institutional / fintech treasuries — Vaneck and other funds use Safe for onchain treasury ops with audit-trail + onchain transparency; (3) personal high-value holdings — Vitalik Buterin uses Safe for >90% of his personal funds; (4) developer / smart-account infrastructure — Safe's modular + programmable + composable contracts are embedded as the smart-account layer in many account-abstraction products. Safe is NOT a consumer wallet for everyday retail (~$1k-$10k balances, Uniswap swaps) — for consumer use, the recommended alternatives are MetaMask + Trust Wallet + Phantom.

How does Safe work?

Safe works as an onchain smart-contract account on Ethereum + 15+ EVM chains. Deployment: The user creates a Safe by deploying the Safe smart-account contract with a configured owner-set (N owners) + threshold (M signatures required). The Safe has a deterministic CREATE2 address (the same owners + same salt produces the same address across EVM chains). Operations: To send a transaction, an owner proposes a tx (the proposing owner's tx proposals are offchain); other owners sign their approvals (offchain EIP-712 signature, no onchain gas); once M-of-N signatures are collected, any owner executes the bundled tx onchain (paying the gas for the entire bundled tx execution). Recovery: The user can rotate owners (one at a time) via quorum-vote; or activate trustless social recovery via nominated guardian. The full developer-level explanation is in the Safe docs at docs.safe.global + the open-source contracts at github.com/safe-global/safe-contracts.

Is Safe non-custodial / self-custodial?

Yes — Safe is fully self-custodial / non-custodial. The smart-account contract is deployed onchain; the user owns the onchain account; Safe Global / any vendor does NOT have any access to the funds. The owner-set is the only group that can approve transactions (via quorum). Safe Global operates only as a public-good offchain indexer (the Safe Transaction Service) + an optional Safe Relay Service — but neither has any custodial authority. Per the official safe.global homepage's comparison section: Safe is 'Fully onchain & open source / User-owned, replaceable signers / Fully portable accounts' — the strongest self-custodial model possible.

How does Safe compare to Fireblocks + BitGo?

Per the official safe.global homepage's comparison table: Safe — 0 AUM fees, Onchain transparent N-of-M signing, Fully onchain & open source, Modular + programmable + composable, User-owned replaceable signers, Fully portable accounts. Fireblocks / BitGo (MPCs) — Subscription + usage costs, Offchain MPC signing, Limited, Policy engine, Vendor-dependent, Full Vendor Lock-in. Safe is the onchain + open-source + 0-AUM alternative. Trade-offs: Safe pros — open source, formally verified, 0 AUM, user-owned, no vendor lock-in, onchain transparency, any signer works; Safe cons — requires understanding multisig, no native insurance, requires self-hosted coordination infra, doesn't have Fireblocks/BitGo's policy-engine UI. Fireblocks/BitGo pros — turn-key institutional setup, insurance coverage, policy engine UI; Fireblocks/BitGo cons — AUM fees (0.5%-2% annually on a $100M treasury = $500k-$2M annual cost), vendor lock-in, offchain MPC (less transparent). For high-value individual treasuries, the recommendation is Safe (with self-hosted coordinator); for institutional treasuries needing regulatory / insurance / compliance, the recommendation is a Safe-compatible custodial partner (Coinbase Custody + Anchorage + BitGo are all Safe-compatible).

How does Safe compare to MetaMask + Trust Wallet + Phantom?

Safe is the smart-account / multisig backbone for high-value / high-security applications; MetaMask + Trust Wallet + Phantom are consumer EOA wallets for everyday retail use. Each Safe transaction requires N approval signatures (e.g. 2-of-3); each MetaMask / Trust Wallet / Phantom transaction requires only 1 signature. Safe is for organizational treasuries (e.g. the Ethereum Foundation's treasury) + high-value individual / family-office holdings (e.g. Vitalik Buterin); MetaMask + Trust Wallet + Phantom are for consumer retail. Best practice: most users should use BOTH — a MetaMask / Trust Wallet / Phantom for everyday retail; a Safe for their high-value / long-term / family-office holdings. Each can be linked (you can use your MetaMask / Trust Wallet / Ledger as one of the owners in a Safe).

Does Safe support Bitcoin (BTC)?

No — Safe has no native Bitcoin deployment. Bitcoin multisig is handled separately by Sparrow (software) paired with hardware wallets (Ledger / Trezor / Coldcard / Foundation Passport / Keystone 3 Pro / Blockstream Jade) — see our hardware wallets directory at /best-hardware-wallets for the full comparison. For cross-chain (Bitcoin + Ethereum) treasuries, the recommended setup is: (1) Safe for the onchain Ethereum + EVM portion, (2) Sparrow + Coldcard / Foundation Passport / Keystone 3 Pro for the Bitcoin portion.

Does Safe support Solana (SOL)?

No — Safe has no native Solana deployment. Solana multisig is handled separately by Squads (squads.so) — the Solana-Safe-equivalent multisig protocol. For cross-chain (Solana + Ethereum) treasuries, the recommended setup is: (1) Safe for the onchain Ethereum + EVM portion, (2) Squads for the onchain Solana portion.

Does Safe work with hardware wallets (Ledger / Trezor / Keystone 3 Pro)?

Yes — any hardware wallet (Ledger + Trezor + Keystone 3 Pro + Foundation Passport + Blockstream Jade + Lattice1 + GridPlus) can be one of the owners in a Safe account. Per the official safe.global homepage's comparison section: Safe is 'User-owned, replaceable signers' — any signer works. The recommended Safe setup for high-value treasuries is: 3-of-5 with all 5 owners being hardware wallets (Coldcard + Foundation Passport + Keystone 3 Pro + Ledger + Trezor) — comparable to the '5-key multisig' model Vitalik Buterin describes in his Safe quote.

What is the Safe{Wallet} web app + app.safe.global?

The Safe{Wallet} web app (at app.safe.global — the official interface for Safe accounts) is the open-source wallet-UI that lets users create Safes, view balances + tx history, propose + sign + execute transactions, configure owner set + threshold, manage spending limits + roles, and interact with SafeApps (the third-party app ecosystem). The web app is free + open source; the user's keys are kept in the browser (MetaMask / Ledger Live / Rabby — Safe Global does NOT see them). The web app is fully functional on mobile browsers + there's a Safe mobile app in development with feature parity to the web app.

What are Safe Shield + Transaction Guards + Security Hub?

Per the official safe.global homepage's 'Safe Shield' section: Safe Shield is the guardian extension layer for Safe accounts, adding Transaction Guards (offchain guards that intercept + can block risky transactions before they're proposed / signed), Clear Transaction Insights (human-readable transaction-intent decoding — instead of raw contract-call data, shows 'Transfer 1000 USDC to address 0xABCD'), Security Hub (real-time treasury monitoring with configurable alerts + integration with AML / attribution analytics). Safe Shield is built right into the Safe{Wallet} web app; it's an optional opt-in layer for organizations + power users wanting the defense-in-depth policy-engine equivalent.

Is Safe really used by Vitalik Buterin?

Yes — per the official safe.global homepage's marquee quote (Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder of Ethereum): 'I use a multisig (safe) for >90% of my personal funds. M-of-N, some keys held by you (but not enough to block recovery), the rest held by other people you trust. Don't reveal who those other people are, even to each other.' This is the highest-profile public endorsement any smart-account / multisig wallet in Web3 has received.
