Tom Lee Expects Ethereum to Outperform Bitcoin on AI, Tokenization
Tom Lee predicted Ethereum will outperform Bitcoin, citing the ETH/BTC ratio breakout and the growth of tokenization and agentic AI as key catalysts.

Veteran market strategist Tom Lee has predicted that Ethereum will outperform Bitcoin over the coming years, citing the growing importance of tokenization and agentic AI as drivers that could break the ETH/BTC ratio out of its multiyear downtrend.

Lee, chairman of BitMine and a well-known Wall Street analyst, said the ETH/BTC ratio has broken above a multiyear downtrend that has suppressed Ethereum's performance relative to Bitcoin since 2021. The breakout, if sustained, could signal the start of a period where Ethereum posts stronger gains than Bitcoin, driven by its utility value in tokenization and AI agent applications.

The ETH/BTC Ratio Breakout

The ETH/BTC ratio, which measures the value of Ethereum relative to Bitcoin, has been in a downtrend for several years as Bitcoin outperformed Ethereum. The downtrend was driven by several factors, including Bitcoin's dominant position as the primary institutional crypto asset, the growth of Bitcoin ETFs, and concerns about Ethereum's competitive position relative to other Layer 1 blockchains.

Lee's observation that the ratio has broken above its downtrend is significant because it suggests a potential shift in the relative performance of the two cryptocurrencies. A breakout from a multiyear downtrend can signal a change in market dynamics, as investors who had been concentrating their allocations in Bitcoin may begin to diversify into Ethereum. The breakout also coincides with Ethereum's 24% weekly gain, which has outpaced Bitcoin's 18% rise over the same period. Tokenization as an Ethereum Catalyst

Lee identified tokenization as a key catalyst for Ethereum's outperformance. The tokenization of real-world assets, including stocks, bonds, real estate, and commodities, is one of the fastest-growing segments of the crypto market, and Ethereum is the primary blockchain platform for tokenization projects. Major financial institutions including Franklin Templeton, BlackRock, and Coinbase have all launched tokenization initiatives on Ethereum or Ethereum-compatible networks.

The growth of tokenization could drive sustained demand for Ether, as the Ethereum network is used to create, transfer, and manage tokenized assets. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily serves as a store of value, Ethereum's value is derived from its utility as a platform for decentralized applications and tokenized assets. As tokenization grows, the demand for Ether could increase, supporting its price relative to Bitcoin. For more on tokenization, see our coverage of Franklin Templeton's SEC clearance.

Agentic AI and Ethereum

Lee also identified agentic AI as a driver of Ethereum's outperformance. AI agents that use blockchain networks to transact and execute smart contracts could generate significant demand for Ethereum's block space and Ether tokens. While Fidelity has cautioned about the risks of the AI-crypto thesis, Lee's view is more bullish, suggesting that AI agents will drive meaningful activity on Ethereum.

The combination of tokenization and AI creates a potentially powerful narrative for Ethereum. Tokenization brings traditional financial assets onto the Ethereum blockchain, while AI agents could use Ethereum to transact autonomously, creating demand for block space and Ether. If both trends materialize, Ethereum could see sustained growth in network activity and token demand, supporting its outperformance relative to Bitcoin. For more on the AI-crypto thesis, see our coverage of Fidelity's six risks to the AI agent thesis.

What This Means for Investors

Lee's prediction of Ethereum outperformance could influence investor allocations, particularly among institutional investors who follow his analysis. If more investors begin to allocate to Ethereum based on the tokenization and AI narrative, the increased demand could support further price appreciation. Lee has previously predicted that Ethereum could reach $12,000, a significant increase from current levels around $2,500.

However, Ethereum's outperformance is not guaranteed. The ETH/BTC ratio breakout could fail, and the tokenization and AI narratives may not materialize as quickly as expected. Additionally, Ethereum faces competition from other Layer 1 blockchains, including Solana, which has been gaining market share in decentralized application usage. Investors should consider both the potential upside and the risks when making allocation decisions.
