The contest over who runs the plumbing of global payments is intensifying — and the two names increasingly at the center of it are Stripe and Swift.
According to CoinDesk, crypto and blockchain executives say the industry's defining battle has changed character. The question is no longer whether the technology works; that debate is largely settled. The new fight is over distribution — who owns the customer relationships and the economic chokepoints through which digital money actually flows.
Four battlegrounds stand out: control of wallets, merchant acceptance, the reserve economics behind stablecoins and digital money, and cross-border settlement. Whoever dominates those layers effectively sets the terms for everyone building on top.
The stakes have risen because blockchain-based payments infrastructure is no longer treated as a niche crypto experiment. A growing number of firms now regard it as a strategic priority — which puts a fintech giant like Stripe and the decades-old interbank messaging network Swift on a collision course, each racing to make its rails the default for the next era of global money movement.
