Stellar's $3B RWA Market Faces a $2M DeFi Gap

Stellar's $3B RWA Market Faces a $2M DeFi Gap
Stellar's $3B RWA market has only $2M deployed in Blend DeFi lending pools, exposing a major gap between tokenized asset issuance and on-chain DeFi activity.

Stellar's RWA market has topped $3 billion in tokenized assets, but just over $2 million is actively used in Blend lending pools, exposing a significant gap between asset issuance and DeFi activity on the network.

Stellar's $3B RWA Market Concentrated in Issuance

Stellar has built a substantial real-world asset market with over $3 billion in tokenized assets issued on its network. The figure includes tokenized U.S. Treasuries, corporate bonds, private credit, and other traditional financial instruments brought on-chain through partnerships with major financial institutions. However, the vast majority of these tokenized assets sit idle in holding wallets rather than circulating through DeFi lending markets or other on-chain financial applications.

Only approximately $2 million of the $3 billion in RWA assets are actively deployed in Blend, Stellar's primary DeFi lending protocol. This represents a utilization rate of less than 0.1%, highlighting the disconnect between asset tokenization and actual DeFi participation on the network. This gap between issuance and DeFi activity contrasts with the more integrated RWA lending seen in Mantle's RWA yield offering expansion.

Blend Pools Show Minimal RWA Activity

Blend, Stellar's main lending protocol built on the Soroban smart contract platform, has struggled to attract meaningful participation from RWA token holders. The protocol's lending pools are designed to accept tokenized assets as collateral, enabling borrowing against real-world financial instruments. However, the low utilization suggests that most RWA holders on Stellar are institutions using the network for custody and transfer rather than DeFi yield generation.

The gap between Stellar's RWA issuance and DeFi activity raises questions about the network's value capture model. While Stellar has successfully attracted institutional tokenization projects, the lack of corresponding DeFi activity means the network's native token may not benefit proportionally from the RWA market's growth. This challenge is distinct from the stablecoin-focused RWA models, such as the World Liberty USD1 launch on Canton Network.

Soroban DeFi Adoption Remains Limited

Stellar's Soroban smart contract platform was launched to enable DeFi applications on the network, but adoption has been slower than expected. The $2 million in Blend lending activity represents a fraction of the total value locked in DeFi across all networks. By comparison, Aave V4 alone has reached $806 million in deposits within months of launch. The comparison highlights the gap between Stellar's institutional tokenization success and its retail DeFi engagement.

Stellar's compliance-first approach to tokenization has attracted regulated financial institutions seeking to issue tokenized assets under proper legal frameworks. However, the same compliance focus may be limiting the network's appeal to DeFi users who prioritize yield generation and composability over regulatory certainty. The network's ability to bridge this gap will likely determine whether its RWA market can transition from passive issuance to active DeFi participation.
