Robot Maker Unitree Goes Public as Hyperliquid Traders Price 4x Upside

Robot Maker Unitree Goes Public as Hyperliquid Traders Price 4x Upside
Hyperliquid traders are pricing Unitree near $93 a share, more than four times its $22.37 Shanghai IPO price, valuing the robotics company at nearly $38 billion versus $9 billion at its IPO.

Robotics manufacturer Unitree is going public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and crypto derivatives traders on Hyperliquid are already pricing the shares at nearly $93 each, more than four times the $22.37 IPO price. The implied valuation of approximately $38 billion on Hyperliquid dwarfed the $9 billion valuation at which Unitree priced its shares, creating a massive gap between crypto market expectations and the official IPO price.

The discrepancy highlights the growing influence of crypto derivatives markets in price discovery for traditional assets. Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetual futures exchange, allows traders to take leveraged positions on stocks before they begin trading on traditional exchanges, effectively creating a pre-market price discovery mechanism that operates outside traditional financial infrastructure.

The Price Gap

Unitree priced its shares at 150.80 yuan, equivalent to approximately $22.37, valuing the company at about $9 billion. Pre-IPO perpetual contracts on Hyperliquid traded between $92 and $94, implying a valuation of nearly $38 billion. The 4.2x premium suggests that crypto market participants see significantly more upside in Unitree's business than the IPO pricing reflects.

However, the gap also creates significant risk for leveraged traders. When Unitree shares begin trading on the Shanghai exchange, the actual opening price may fall well short of the Hyperliquid-implied price, potentially triggering liquidations for traders holding leveraged long positions.

Why Crypto Traders Are Bullish on Unitree

Unitree is one of the world's leading manufacturers of humanoid and quadruped robots, and the company has attracted significant attention as the robotics and AI sectors have boomed. The company's robots have been used in entertainment, research, and industrial applications, and investors see the company as a play on the growing robotics market.

The high valuation on Hyperliquid also reflects the broader trend of crypto traders moving into non-crypto assets. As the crypto market has stagnated, traders on platforms like Hyperliquid have increasingly looked to traditional stocks, commodities, and other assets for trading opportunities. The ability to trade pre-IPO stocks on a decentralized platform is a new phenomenon that blurs the line between crypto and traditional finance.

The Liquidation Risk

Analysts at Allium warned that the leveraged bets on Hyperliquid are vulnerable when trading begins. If Unitree's shares open significantly below the Hyperliquid-implied price of $93, traders holding long positions could face margin calls and forced liquidations, potentially leading to a cascade of selling.

The risk is amplified by the leverage available on Hyperliquid, which allows traders to take positions with significant borrowed capital. While leverage amplifies gains, it also amplifies losses, and a significant gap between the Hyperliquid price and the actual opening price could lead to substantial losses for leveraged traders.

The Broader Implications

The Unitree IPO on Hyperliquid represents a new frontier in the intersection of crypto and traditional finance. Decentralized derivatives platforms are increasingly offering trading on traditional assets, from stocks to commodities to IPOs, creating a parallel price discovery mechanism that operates outside the regulated traditional financial system.

This trend raises questions about the role of traditional exchanges in price discovery. If crypto platforms can offer trading on stocks before traditional exchanges, they could capture significant trading volume and liquidity. The growth of prediction markets like Kalshi and the expansion of decentralized derivatives platforms like Hyperliquid suggest that the boundary between crypto and traditional finance is becoming increasingly blurred.
