Ripple thinks the AI agents have only just gotten started on its blockchain. After agentic transactions on the XRP Ledger recently crossed 1 million, RippleX's head of engineering, Ayo Akinyele, told The Block he expects the count to accelerate sharply from here — potentially reaching 10 million, and even 100 million, within the next couple of years as agent tooling and infrastructure mature.
What “Agentic” Payments Actually Are
Agentic payments are transactions initiated by AI-powered software acting on a person's behalf, rather than payments a human approves one at a time. The vision animating the space is straightforward but far-reaching: give AI agents their own digital wallets so they can make programmable, round-the-clock payments on-chain — no traditional bank account or credit card required — and let them autonomously pay for the data, computing power, and services they need to finish assigned tasks. As developers race to build that future, interest in the underlying rails has intensified.
Why Ripple Bets on XRP Ledger for the Job
Akinyele framed the ledger's appeal in operational terms: the goal is to make it frictionless for AI agents to pay for APIs and digital services, leaning on settlement in roughly three to five seconds, predictable transaction costs, and a network he says was purpose-built for payments from the start. For machine-to-machine commerce — where an agent may fire off thousands of micro-payments — speed and fee predictability aren't niceties; they're prerequisites.
The x402 Foundation Seat
Ripple's strategy extends beyond its own chain. The company recently joined the x402 Foundation as a premier member, alongside a heavyweight roster that includes Coinbase, Circle, AWS, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa. Originally developed by Coinbase, x402 lets AI agents and applications automatically pay for APIs and other online services — a shared standard for the emerging agentic economy. Akinyele called the relationship strategic precisely because a seat at the table lets Ripple help shape both the governance and the technical direction of how that economy gets built.
From APIs Today to Physical Goods Next
For all the grand visions of agents buying everything from compute to physical products, the reality on XRP Ledger so far is narrower: most activity has involved payments for APIs and data, according to t54, a Ripple-backed infrastructure startup. But that's beginning to widen. t54 co-founder Chandler Fang said the company is onboarding real-world merchants through ecosystem partners, which will let agents purchase physical goods and services over the ledger — something he flagged as one of the next major growth areas actively being rolled out.
Put together, the picture is of an early but fast-moving experiment: a million transactions already logged, a clear technical pitch around speed and cost, a governance seat among the biggest names in payments, and a roadmap that moves from digital services toward real-world commerce. Whether the count reaches Akinyele's 10-million — or 100-million — marks will depend on how quickly the agentic economy graduates from developer demos to everyday machine-driven spending. Ripple, clearly, is positioning to be one of the rails it runs on.
