Quantum computing, long the subject of breathless predictions and equally vocal skepticism, is edging closer to a genuine commercial inflection point. In a wide-ranging interview, IBM chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said quantum will begin generating meaningful commercial revenue by 2028 or 2029, and that the industry could reach a trillion dollars in value by the end of the next decade.
From Lab to Revenue
For the better part of two decades, quantum computing has been a research discipline, not a business. IBM's roadmap — codenamed Starling and targeting a modular, fault-tolerant system with tens of thousands of logical qubits — has been the clearest attempt to turn the technology into a commercially relevant machine.
Krishna's timeline is significant because it is the first time a top-tier quantum executive has publicly bracketed the revenue window so tightly. Until now the consensus was that useful quantum advantage lay somewhere in the hazy 2030s. If the CEO is right, the gap between laboratory breakthrough and paid production workload is closing quickly — and the cryptographic implications for Bitcoin and every other blockchain are getting real.
The Bitcoin Security Angle
Crypto networks depend on elliptic-curve cryptography that, in principle, a sufficiently large fault-tolerant quantum computer could break. A workshop of experts recently warned that post-quantum migration is no longer a far-off IT concern but a near-term strategic problem. That warning landed uncomfortably close to a separate security alert around the Coldcard hardware wallet platform over a randomness flaw — a reminder that classical cryptography is already hard enough to get right.
Bitcoin's signature scheme can be upgraded, but any transition will require years of soft-fork coordination, wallet migration, and user education. The question the community must now face is whether the post-quantum clock is ticking faster than the upgrade clock.
Miners Eye Quantum as a Tailwind
Publicly listed miners were among the first to scent opportunity. MARA Holdings, Riot Platforms and CleanSpark have all in recent filings referenced quantum-resistance research as a strategic differentiator. Some have begun exploring hash-function selection and signing-algorithm upgrades that would survive a cryptographically relevant quantum computer.
The miners have an additional reason to watch quantum closely: the same cooling and control systems used in superconducting qubit machines overlap with technologies they already deploy at scale. There is a plausible medium-term story in which the largest mining sites become hybrid classical-quantum computing platforms.
The Broader Tech Pivot
Quantum's proximity to commercial relevance has not escaped the institutional trading desks. As quantum research funding accelerates, crypto's high-beta names have begun trading as a proxy for the theme. That positioning is striking given that institutional crypto trading hit a 72% share even as realized volatility dropped to a record low, suggesting allocators are increasingly comfortable using crypto as a directional expression of adjacent technology narratives.
Put bluntly: when IBM says quantum revenue is two-to-three years out, Bitcoin option desks pay attention.
A Trillion-Dollar Industry?
Drilling into Krishna's trillion-dollar framing, the number reflects the application layer as much as the hardware. Material simulation, drug discovery, logistics optimization and financial modeling are all expected to migrate workloads onto quantum coprocessors once logical qubit counts climb into the meaningful range. The economic value of those workloads, not the cost of the machines themselves, is what underwrites the headline estimate.
For crypto, the takeaway is double-edged. The same machines that could threaten elliptic-curve signatures will also unlock new kinds of zero-knowledge proof systems, new cryptographic primitives, and new on-chain compute models. The transition is as much an opportunity as a threat — provided the industry starts preparing now.
