Paul Tudor Jones' Firm Increases Stake in BlackRock Bitcoin ETF After Year of Selling

Paul Tudor Jones' Firm Increases Stake in BlackRock Bitcoin ETF After Year of Selling
Billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones' investment firm raised its IBIT stake by 18.9% to 688,529 shares worth $22.9 million as of June 30, marking the first increase after a year of net selling. The position remains 91.4% below its 2024 peak.

Billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones' investment firm Tudor Investment has increased its stake in BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) by 18.9% to 688,529 shares, worth approximately $22.9 million as of June 30. The increase marks the first time the firm has added to its Bitcoin ETF position after approximately a year of net selling, potentially signaling a turning point in institutional sentiment toward the largest cryptocurrency.

The position, however, remains a fraction of what it once was. Tudor first disclosed 869,565 IBIT shares in mid-2024 and aggressively increased the position to 8.05 million shares, worth approximately $427 million, by the end of 2024. Throughout 2025, the firm steadily sold down its stake as Bitcoin's price declined from its all-time high near $124,000, and the current holding of 688,529 shares is still 91.4% below the 2024 peak.

A Bullish Reversal

The increase, while modest in absolute terms, is significant because it reverses a year-long trend of selling. Tudor had been one of the most prominent institutional Bitcoin advocates, famously announcing in 2020 that he was allocating a portion of his fund to Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation. His decision to sell throughout 2025 was seen as a bearish signal, and the reversal suggests that he may be seeing value at current price levels.

The filing also revealed changes in Tudor's options positioning on IBIT. Call options fell 85.2% to 148,000 underlying shares, while puts slipped 1.4% to 715,000. The reduction in call options while increasing direct holdings suggests a shift from leveraged exposure to spot holdings, a more conservative but also more committed position.

What This Means for Institutional Bitcoin

Paul Tudor Jones is one of the most closely watched investors in finance, and his positions are often seen as a bellwether for institutional sentiment. The decision to add to his Bitcoin ETF position after a year of selling could encourage other institutional investors who have been on the sidelines to reconsider their stance on Bitcoin.

The move also comes alongside other institutional accumulation. UBS recently boosted its Bitcoin ETF call options 24-fold, and the pattern of institutional buying suggests that large investors are using the current price weakness to build positions. Bitcoin has been trading below $65,000 for much of 2026, well below its all-time high, and institutions appear to be viewing the lower prices as a buying opportunity.

The Put Position

While Tudor increased its direct IBIT holdings, the firm also maintained a significant put position of 715,000 underlying shares. Puts give the holder the right to sell at a specified price, providing downside protection. The large put position alongside the increased direct holdings suggests that Tudor is maintaining a hedged approach, bullish on Bitcoin but still protecting against further downside.

This hedged approach is typical of institutional investors who are required to manage risk carefully. Unlike retail investors who can take unhedged positions, institutions like Tudor must consider the risk management implications of their portfolios and typically use options to hedge their directional bets.

The Context of the Increase

The increase comes at a critical time for the Bitcoin market. After months of ETF outflows and declining prices, there are signs that institutional demand is beginning to return. The recent cluster of headwinds that has weighed on Bitcoin, including regulatory delays, ETF outflows, and rising Treasury yields, has created a difficult environment for the cryptocurrency. But the Tudor increase suggests that at least some institutional investors see the current environment as a buying opportunity.

The increase also comes as the regulatory landscape is evolving. World Liberty Financial's conditional bank charter and the White House crypto meeting suggest that the regulatory environment is becoming more accommodating, which could provide a catalyst for institutional Bitcoin demand.

The Longer-Term Picture

While the Tudor increase is a positive signal, it is important to keep it in context. The current position of 688,529 shares is still 91.4% below the 2024 peak, meaning that Tudor has significantly reduced its overall Bitcoin exposure over the past two years. One quarter of buying does not necessarily signal a full reversal of the year-long selling trend.

However, the increase does suggest that the selling has at least paused, and that Tudor sees value at current prices. If other institutional investors follow suit, the institutional demand could provide the catalyst that Bitcoin needs to break out of its current trading range. For now, the Tudor increase is a modest but meaningful signal that institutional interest in Bitcoin has not disappeared, even in a challenging market environment.
