Miden Bets on Privacy Stablecoins With Introduction of USDCx
Miden plans to introduce USDCx, a privacy-focused stablecoin backed 1:1 by USDC through Circle's xReserve infrastructure. Transactions will be private by default while allowing selective disclosure for compliance, targeting institutional finance use cases.

Miden is planning to introduce USDCx, a privacy-focused stablecoin backed 1:1 by Circle's USDC, at the same time as the zero-knowledge blockchain prepares to debut its mainnet. The launch targets one of the biggest barriers to bringing institutional financial activity onchain: the transparency of public blockchains.

Issued natively on Miden using Circle's xReserve infrastructure, USDCx will be backed 1:1 by USDC held in an xReserve smart contract. Users will be able to hold and transfer USDCx without publicly revealing balances, counterparties, or transaction histories, a significant departure from how stablecoins currently operate on public blockchains.

Privacy by Default, Disclosure on Demand

The stablecoin is expected to go live at the end of this month alongside the Miden mainnet. Miden is a California-based zero-knowledge blockchain built around client-side proving, where transactions are executed and proved on users' devices rather than exposed to the network.

The design provides privacy by default while allowing users to selectively disclose information when needed. The selective-disclosure system lets users prove balances, provenance, or other information to auditors, regulators, and counterparties when required. This approach aims to reconcile the confidentiality that institutions demand with the transparency that regulators expect.

Why Privacy Matters for Stablecoins

Public blockchains expose transaction histories, balances, and counterparties by default. That level of transparency is difficult to reconcile with how businesses and financial institutions operate. Trading firms do not want to reveal positions, companies cannot publish payroll and treasury activity, and individuals may not want their financial lives visible on a block explorer.

Privacy infrastructure aims to bring the confidentiality of traditional finance onchain while preserving crypto's programmability and verifiability. Miden sees USDCx as the foundation for a broader category it calls PriFi, spanning private institutional trading, B2B payments, payroll, cross-border payments, and corporate treasury management.

Backed by Major Investors

The company spun out of Polygon as an independent project in April 2025 and is backed by a16z crypto, 1kx, Hack VC, and others. The backing from prominent crypto venture capital firms signals that the market sees significant potential in privacy-focused blockchain infrastructure.

The Broader Stablecoin Evolution

USDCx represents a new direction in the stablecoin market, which has grown to nearly $287 billion in combined market capitalization. While most stablecoins prioritize transparency and verifiability, Miden is betting that institutional users will pay for privacy.

The launch comes as the stablecoin ecosystem diversifies rapidly. Hong Kong recently saw the launch of Anchorpoint's HKDAP stablecoin, and Fidelity is adding staking to its ether ETF. The convergence of privacy technology, stablecoin infrastructure, and institutional demand is creating new categories of crypto products that were not possible just a year ago.

Whether PriFi becomes a mainstream category or remains a niche offering will depend on whether institutional users adopt privacy-focused stablecoins for real-world applications. Miden's bet is that the demand for onchain privacy is large enough to support an entire ecosystem, and that selective disclosure can satisfy regulators without sacrificing the confidentiality that institutions require.
