Kalshi Files for Equity Index and Copper Perpetual Futures with CFTC

Kalshi Files for Equity Index and Copper Perpetual Futures with CFTC
Kalshi filed with the CFTC to launch perpetual futures tied to a U.S. stock index and copper, bringing crypto-native derivatives to traditional markets.

Kalshi has filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission to launch perpetual futures tied to a large-cap U.S. stock index and the spot price of copper, expanding the prediction market platform's ambitions beyond event contracts into traditional financial derivatives.

The filing, submitted on August 18, represents a significant escalation of Kalshi's push into regulated financial markets. The company is seeking CFTC approval for perpetual futures — a contract type popular in crypto markets but largely absent from traditional U.S. financial exchanges — connected to a U.S. large-cap equity benchmark and copper prices.

What Kalshi Is Proposing

The filing includes a US500 perpetual futures contract tied to the MerQube U.S. large-cap index, giving traders exposure to American equities without holding the underlying stocks. Perpetual futures differ from traditional futures contracts in that they have no expiration date, allowing positions to remain open indefinitely subject to funding rate mechanisms that keep contract prices aligned with the underlying asset.

A separate copper perpetual futures contract would give traders exposure to the industrial metal's spot price. Copper is widely tracked as an economic indicator due to its use in construction, electronics, and manufacturing, making it a popular vehicle for expressing macroeconomic views. The CFTC filing shows the copper perpetual would be tied to the COMEX copper futures price.

Why This Matters for Traditional Exchanges

Kalshi's filing challenges traditional futures exchanges like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange by bringing perpetual futures — a product structure native to crypto trading — into regulated U.S. markets. Perpetual futures have become the dominant contract type in cryptocurrency trading, accounting for the majority of global crypto derivatives volume, but they have been largely unavailable to U.S. traders in traditional asset classes.

The CME has already challenged Kalshi's efforts to launch perpetuals in the U.S. through a lawsuit filed last month, arguing that the prediction market platform's expansion into traditional derivatives raises regulatory and competitive concerns. The legal battle could determine whether perpetual futures become a mainstream product in U.S. financial markets or remain confined to crypto trading. The CFTC Filing Process

Kalshi filed the applications as a designated contract market, the same regulatory status that allows it to operate prediction markets on elections, sports, and economic events. The CFTC will review the filings to determine whether the proposed contracts meet regulatory requirements for market integrity, price discovery, and investor protection. If approved, the contracts could launch relatively quickly since Kalshi already holds DCM status.

The filing also demonstrates how the boundaries between prediction markets, crypto trading, and traditional finance are blurring. Kalshi started as a platform for betting on real-world events, but its expansion into equity index and commodity perpetual futures positions it as a multi-asset derivatives venue that competes directly with established futures exchanges. The Broader Perpetual Futures Trend

Kalshi is not alone in pushing perpetual futures into traditional markets. Several crypto exchanges and trading platforms have explored bringing perpetual contracts to U.S. traders for traditional assets, attracted by the product's popularity in crypto markets. The funding rate mechanism that keeps perpetual prices aligned with the underlying asset allows for continuous trading without the rollover costs associated with traditional expiring futures.

However, the regulatory landscape for perpetual futures in traditional markets remains uncertain. The CFTC has historically focused on traditional futures and options, and perpetual contracts raise questions about margin requirements, price manipulation risks, and investor protection that may require new regulatory frameworks or interpretations of existing rules.

What Comes Next

The CFTC's review process will determine whether Kalshi can proceed with its equity index and copper perpetual futures. If approved, the contracts would mark a significant milestone in bringing crypto-native financial products to traditional U.S. markets. If rejected or delayed, the filing still signals growing demand for perpetual futures across asset classes beyond cryptocurrency.

The CME's legal challenge adds another layer of complexity. If the court rules in CME's favor, it could restrict Kalshi's ability to offer traditional derivatives products. If Kalshi prevails, it could open the door for other platforms to offer perpetual futures on a wider range of assets, accelerating the convergence between crypto and traditional financial markets.
