ICBC Settles China's First Digital Yuan Payment to Singapore — 10 Million Yuan in Shipping Fees, Delivered Same Day

ICBC Settles China's First Digital Yuan Payment to Singapore — 10 Million Yuan in Shipping Fees, Delivered Same Day
ICBC completed the first China-Singapore cross-border digital yuan payment, settling nearly 10 million yuan in shipping fees through CBETS, highlighting Beijing's expanding CBDC strategy for international trade and regional payments.

China's digital yuan has completed another step out of the domestic pilot phase and into international trade. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has settled the country's first digital yuan cross-border payment with Singapore, moving nearly 10 million yuan in import shipping fees with same-day delivery to the recipient.

According to Mobile Payment Network, the transaction was carried out jointly by ICBC's Shanghai branch and ICBC Singapore, making it the first China-Singapore cross-border payment to run through the Digital Currency Express comprehensive settlement platform, known as CBETS.

How the Payment Worked

The use case was ordinary trade finance rather than a showcase demonstration. ICBC Shanghai introduced the corporate client to the Digital Currency Express platform as an alternative settlement method, then coordinated with its Singapore branch to complete the transfer.

The reported benefits are the ones cross-border payments have always struggled with: shortened processing time and direct visibility into where funds are during transit. Settlement arriving the same day is the headline result — conventional correspondent banking routes for a payment of this type typically take considerably longer and offer less transparency along the chain.

Building a Regional Network

The significance extends past a single transaction. ICBC has now established integrated digital yuan payment and collection services with both Singapore and Laos through the CBETS platform, creating a unified cross-border settlement framework that links its domestic and overseas branches.

That builds on earlier milestones. In January, ICBC processed the first cross-border digital yuan remittance under a China-Laos international trade arrangement, coordinated between its Vientiane and Shandong branches. Its Singapore branch had separately piloted overseas top-ups of individual digital yuan wallets, an outcome announced at the 2025 China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, allowing Singaporean travellers to spend e-CNY in China.

The Digital Currency Express platform itself was built by the International Operation Center for the digital yuan, which the People's Bank of China formally launched in September 2025 as what Beijing describes as a Chinese solution for central bank digital currency cross-border cooperation.

The Strategic Picture

First piloted in 2020, the e-CNY is the digital form of China's sovereign currency, and Beijing has steadily accelerated its use beyond domestic retail payments. The PBOC has pledged to integrate it into the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and to expand adoption across Southeast Asia through China's CIPS payment network.

Trade settlement is where the strategic logic is clearest. Retail tourist spending generates headlines, but corporate payments — shipping fees, commodity purchases, supplier invoices — are where a currency either becomes plumbing or doesn't. A same-day 10 million yuan settlement between two of Asia's largest trading partners is a small volume against total China-Singapore trade, but it demonstrates the rails work for the transaction type that actually matters.

It also lands amid broader momentum in Asian digital currency infrastructure, with South Korea preparing live deposit-token transactions and Hong Kong advancing its own stablecoin framework. The competition to define how cross-border value moves in the region is no longer theoretical.
