Dogecoin Speculation Hits October 2025 Levels Even as Price Slides 70%

Dogecoin Speculation Hits October 2025 Levels Even as Price Slides 70%
Open interest in DOGE futures has climbed to approximately $1.21 billion, with speculative positioning in coin terms approaching October 2025 levels despite the token trading 70% lower. Long positions heavily outnumber shorts, raising liquidation risks.

Dogecoin traders are putting more money behind leveraged bets even as DOGE struggles near 7 cents, creating a growing mismatch between weak prices and rising risk-taking in the futures market. The speculation has rebuilt to levels last seen when Dogecoin traded at three times its current price.

Open interest, the value of futures contracts still outstanding, has climbed to approximately $1.21 billion from roughly $930 million in late June. DOGE fell almost 3% over the past 24 hours and is down nearly 70% over the past year.

The Scale of the Speculation

The scale is easier to see when measured in coins rather than dollars. Open interest has climbed back to 17.18 billion DOGE, just below the 17.78 billion seen in October 2025, even though DOGE now trades around 7 cents versus 25 cents then. Speculative positioning has almost fully rebuilt in coin terms even though each of those coins is worth less than a third of what it was.

This means traders are borrowing roughly the same amount of Dogecoin to take leveraged positions as they were when the price was at its peak. The dollar value is lower only because each coin is worth less, not because traders are taking smaller positions.

The Long-Short Imbalance

The account ratios reveal the direction of those bets. On Binance, more than three accounts held long positions for every one holding a short. On OKX, the ratio was above five to one. While this does not mean three times as much money is betting on higher prices, as every futures contract has a buyer and a seller, it indicates that more traders are choosing the bullish side while the price keeps sliding.

This imbalance creates a fragility in the market. A leveraged bet that runs out of collateral gets closed automatically by the exchange, which means selling the position into the market. A cluster of those closing together adds fresh selling pressure to a market that is already declining.

The Liquidation Risk

Those long positions become the pressure point if DOGE slides further. If a significant number of leveraged longs are forced to liquidate simultaneously, the resulting selling cascade could push the price down sharply in a short period. This dynamic has played out repeatedly in crypto markets, where forced liquidations amplify price movements in both directions.

The risk is compounded by the fact that DOGE was the only major token lower on the day while the rest of the market edged up. That divergence suggests that Dogecoin-specific factors, rather than broader market trends, are driving the selling pressure.

Context in a Broader Market

The Dogecoin speculation stands in contrast to the broader crypto market, which has been described as being in hibernation. Bitcoin has been stuck near $63,500 after the CPI report, and most major tokens have been trading in narrow ranges. The fact that Dogecoin speculators are rebuilding leveraged positions even as the broader market trades quietly suggests that meme-driven trading dynamics are operating independently of broader market trends.

Earlier this week, Dogecoin and BNB led majors higher while Bitcoin slipped, showing that altcoin speculation can persist even when the market leader is flat. The question now is whether the leveraged longs will be vindicated by a rebound or whether the mismatch between positioning and price will resolve through forced liquidations.
