Binance Founder CZ Says 'Tokenize Everything' to Attract Investors

Binance Founder CZ Says 'Tokenize Everything' to Attract Investors
Binance founder CZ called for tokenizing everything from stocks to government bonds, saying tokenized assets could help countries attract foreign capital.

The founder of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange has called for the tokenization of everything from stocks to real estate to government bonds, arguing that tokenized assets could help countries attract foreign capital and modernize their financial infrastructure.

Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, said that tokenizing assets on blockchain networks could make them more accessible to global investors, particularly in emerging markets where traditional financial infrastructure is underdeveloped. The Binance founder has been in talks with approximately a dozen governments about tokenizing national assets, positioning himself as a consultant on sovereign tokenization initiatives.

The Tokenize Everything Vision

CZ's vision of tokenizing everything encompasses a wide range of asset classes, including stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities, and government debt. The idea is that by representing these assets as tokens on a blockchain, they become easier to trade, transfer, and fractionalize, making them accessible to a broader range of investors. Tokenized assets can be traded globally, 24 hours a day, with near-instant settlement and lower transaction costs than traditional financial markets.

The tokenization vision is not entirely new. Major financial institutions including BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, and JPMorgan have all explored tokenization initiatives. Franklin Templeton recently received SEC clearance to allow its mutual funds and ETFs to invest in its BENJI tokenized money market fund, and tokenized equities have tripled their market share in recent months. CZ's contribution is the ambition of the vision and his focus on governments as the drivers of tokenization. For more on institutional tokenization, see our coverage of Franklin Templeton's SEC clearance.

Government Tokenization Initiatives

CZ has been actively pitching tokenization to governments, arguing that tokenizing national assets could help countries attract foreign investment. His pitch includes tokenizing stock markets, issuing national stablecoins, and using blockchain technology to modernize financial infrastructure. The approach has reportedly resonated with some governments, particularly in emerging markets that are looking for ways to increase access to capital.

The government tokenization pitch involves several components. First, tokenizing a country's stock market could make it accessible to global investors who currently face barriers to entry, such as foreign investment restrictions, high transaction costs, and limited market access. Second, issuing a national stablecoin could provide a digital payment infrastructure that reduces reliance on foreign payment systems. Third, tokenizing government debt could make it easier for countries to raise capital from international investors. Multi-Chain Token Issuance

CZ has backed the idea of issuing tokenized assets across multiple blockchain networks rather than on a single chain. This approach would allow tokenized assets to take advantage of the strengths of different blockchains, such as the security of Bitcoin, the smart contract capabilities of Ethereum, and the speed of Solana. Multi-chain tokenization could also reduce the risk of dependence on a single blockchain, making the tokenized asset ecosystem more resilient.

The multi-chain approach aligns with the broader trend in the crypto industry toward interoperability. Cross-chain protocols like Chainlink's CCIP have seen increased adoption as users seek to move assets between different blockchains. The $15 billion migration from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP following the Kelp DAO exploit demonstrated the importance of reliable cross-chain infrastructure for the tokenized asset ecosystem.

Challenges and Skepticism

While CZ's tokenization vision is ambitious, it faces significant challenges. Regulatory barriers remain the primary obstacle, as most countries have not established comprehensive frameworks for tokenized securities. The CLARITY Act in the United States could provide some regulatory clarity, but it faces political opposition and may not pass. In Europe, the MiCA regulation provides a framework for crypto assets but has been criticized for being overly restrictive.

There is also skepticism about CZ's role as a promoter of government tokenization. CZ stepped down as CEO of Binance after pleading guilty to U.S. anti-money laundering violations, and some may question whether a figure with a criminal record is the appropriate advocate for government financial infrastructure initiatives. However, CZ's knowledge of the crypto industry and his connections with governments around the world give him a unique position to influence the direction of tokenization policy.
