Crypto.com is pushing deeper into traditional finance, rolling out tokenized derivatives tracking 1,500 U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds as crypto exchanges increasingly expand into the stock market. The launch adds to a growing rush by crypto platforms into equities and a intensifying debate over what a tokenized stock should actually represent.
The exchange said eligible users in the European Economic Area and other approved markets can gain exposure to stocks including Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia, as well as ETFs such as the SPDR Gold Shares and iShares Silver Trust. Positions start at $1 and can trade around the clock, a significant departure from traditional market hours.
Synthetic Exposure, Not Share Ownership
The products are derivatives that reference the price of the underlying stocks or ETFs. They provide synthetic exposure, meaning that if Apple shares rise, the corresponding product is designed to follow that move. However, its holder does not become an Apple shareholder.
Investors do not gain legal or beneficial ownership of the underlying securities and do not receive voting or other shareholder rights. They may receive dividend-equivalent adjustments, according to the exchange. The underlying assets supporting the products are held with a U.S. broker-dealer.
A Market Growing 600% in a Year
The launch lands in a fast-growing corner at the intersection of the crypto market and traditional assets. Tokenized stocks have reached approximately $2.49 billion in value, up roughly 600% over the past year, according to industry data. Major financial institutions have taken notice, with one global bank estimating that tokenized securities could grow into a $5.5 trillion market by 2030, including $2.6 trillion in tokenized equities.
Multiple crypto exchanges have rolled out tokenized equity products for investors outside the U.S., while the infrastructure backbone of the U.S. securities markets has begun testing tokenized securities infrastructure. Major stock exchanges have also unveiled tokenization initiatives.
Two Competing Models
Not all tokenized stock products work the same way. Synthetic or derivative products track a stock's performance without making the buyer a shareholder. Issuer-sponsored models, by contrast, can put actual common shares onchain while preserving ownership and shareholder rights.
The distinction matters. Synthetic products offer easier access and lower friction but strip away the governance rights that come with share ownership. Issuer-sponsored models preserve those rights but require more complex infrastructure and regulatory compliance. The debate is drawing increasing attention from regulators and market infrastructure providers as tokenized securities move closer to the financial mainstream.
Built on a Regulatory License
The offering builds on Crypto.com's May 2025 acquisition of a licensed entity, which secured the exchange a MiFID license for offering regulated financial products in Europe. That regulatory foundation distinguishes the launch from unregulated tokenized stock offerings that have appeared on offshore platforms.
The move mirrors a broader trend of traditional institutions stepping deeper into tokenization. As the lines between crypto and traditional finance continue to blur, the question of whether tokenized stocks should confer ownership or merely price exposure will shape the next phase of market development.
What This Means for Investors
For crypto-native investors, the launch represents another step toward a unified trading experience where stocks and digital assets sit side by side in a single portfolio. For traditional market participants, it raises questions about regulatory arbitrage, investor protection, and the future structure of securities markets.
The tokenized stock market may still be small compared to the global equities universe, but its 600% growth rate suggests that the convergence of crypto and traditional finance is accelerating. Whether synthetic exposure is enough to satisfy investors, or whether demand for true onchain ownership will prevail, remains one of the defining questions for this emerging asset class.
