Tom Lee Says the Bull Market Started in June. His Treasury Is the Proof.

News cover showing a golden bull, U.S. Treasury note, coins, and a rising chart about a bull market starting in June.

Summary :

  • Bitmine chairman Tom Lee says a crypto bull market began in late June and expects institutions to raise exposure in Q4.

  • Lee cites ETH's 6,519 basis points of outperformance against other macro assets quarter-to-date.

  • Bitmine bought another 27,562 ETH worth about $75 million, bringing its treasury to nearly 5.98 million ETH.

  • More than 5.06 million ETH, about 85% of holdings, is now staked, projecting $357 million in annual staking revenue.

  • Bitmine is within about 16,000 ETH of the 6 million mark and has completed 98% of its 5% supply target.

Tom Lee has called the crypto bull market as begun, and this time his vehicle is talking with a $16 billion balance sheet behind the claim. The Bitmine chairman said the bull market started in late June, driven by capital rotating from AI stocks into crypto, strengthening fundamentals around tokenization and AI, and what he described as the end of the four-year crypto cycle. "We believe a crypto bull market is underway, having started in late June," Lee said in the company's latest weekly treasury update, and his timing argument is specific: Ethereum has outperformed other macro assets by 6,519 basis points quarter-to-date, which he calls "a prelude to a potentially stronger up move in the 4th quarter of 2026."

Why Tom Lee thinks the crypto bull market strengthens in Q4

The institutional positioning argument is the load-bearing part of the call. Lee said institutions remained underweight crypto through 2026 partly because AI stocks performed strongly earlier in the year, and he expects that gap to close: "We expect institutions to substantially increase their exposure in the final 3 months of 2026. We believe this could add meaningful upside to the gains seen since June 30." The framing reverses the year's dominant rotation narrative, the same one visible when AI tokens rode the sector's $18.6 billion surge, and it aligns with the flow data already turning: U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted $365 million in July against $205 million for Bitcoin funds, even before the most recent week when Ether funds wobbled while Solana and Bitcoin recovered. Lee's case is not that crypto is cheap, it is that the marginal institutional buyer has not arrived yet, and Q4 is when allocation committees move.

His consistency record on Ethereum this cycle is worth noting. In August, as ETH gained 29% over seven days, Lee argued a rotation toward Ethereum had begun and that it would outperform Bitcoin in the current cycle, with Fundstrat data showing an 80% correlation between Bitmine shares and ETH. A month later he identified the CLARITY vote, renewed Korean demand and the four-year cycle as the catalysts into year-end, saying the cycle was "bottoming within the next few weeks." Bitcoin has since crossed $85,000 for the first time in eight months, which makes the September bottoming call look prescient and gives the Q4 extension claim a running start, in line with the $2,550-to-$2,800 breakout path Ethereum has been tracing.

Bitmine is one week from 6 million ETH

The treasury numbers show the conviction being funded weekly. Bitmine added 27,562 ETH worth roughly $75 million since its Sept. 14 update, taking holdings to 5,983,940 ETH, about $16.3 billion, within roughly 16,000 ETH of the 6 million milestone and the company has bought every week since beginning the strategy in June 2025. Total crypto, cash, marketable securities and other investments stand at $17.1 billion, the holdings represent more than 4.9% of Ethereum's roughly 122.1 million circulating supply, and the company says it has completed 98% of its "Alchemy of 5%" target to control 5% of supply. The staking machine is equally aggressive: 5,067,309 ETH staked as of Sept. 20, about 85% of holdings, worth roughly $13.8 billion, which Lee says is more ETH staked than any other entity in the world. At the current 2.62% seven-day annualized yield, that projects about $357 million in annual staking revenue, rising to a possible $421 million if the entire treasury is staked through MAVAN and partners. Staking is not a side effect of the strategy; it generated $45.7 million of Bitmine's $46.5 million in quarterly revenue in the three months ended May 31.

The competitive context sharpens both the bet and its risk. Bitmine remains the largest public Ethereum treasury, ahead of SharpLink's roughly 888,938 ETH and The Ether Machine's 496,712 ETH, and second among all public crypto treasuries behind only Strategy's 846,000 BTC, worth about $71.9 billion. A company holding nearly 5% of an asset's supply, staking 85% of it, and broadcasting a bullish call from its chairman is the most concentrated public expression of the Ethereum thesis in existence, and its share price now lives and dies with it.

What would falsify the call

Credibility requires naming the failure conditions. Lee's thesis breaks if the AI-to-crypto rotation reverses, since an AI stock melt-up in Q4 would keep institutional money where it sat all year, or if ETH's Q3 outperformance turns out to be front-running rather than prelude, in which case Q4 delivers mean reversion instead of continuation. It also breaks if the four-year cycle claim is simply wrong this time, a possibility its own advocates concede by calling the pattern's ending a factor. And Bitmine's structure amplifies whatever happens: at nearly 6 million ETH, every 10% Ethereum move shifts the treasury by more than $1.6 billion, and the staking income that makes the machine cash-generative depends on yields that contract as more ETH stakes. The bull case is well-built, well-funded and now on the record with a date. If institutions do what Lee expects in the next three months, Bitmine crosses 6 million ETH as the market's biggest winner alongside Ethereum itself. If they do not, the most leveraged ETH position on earth will be the first thing the market reprices.
