Coinbase Pitches Canada on Becoming Its Only Financial App — Stocks, ETFs, Crypto and Prediction Markets in One Account
Coinbase plans to expand its “Everything Exchange” to Canada, combining crypto, stocks, ETFs, and prediction markets in one app, while tokenized stocks launch for non-U.S. users this month.

Coinbase has a new message for Canadians: stop thinking of it as a crypto exchange. Eric Richmond, country director and CEO of Coinbase Canada, told BNN Bloomberg this week that the company is bringing its “Everything Exchange” north of the border — a single platform where crypto, stocks, ETFs, and prediction markets all trade from one account.

Richmond framed it as a change of chapter. The first phase of Coinbase in Canada, he said, was about being a crypto exchange; phase two is about creating one place where Canadians can have their entire financial experience in a single app — underpinned by technology that makes things frictionless, seamless, and available around the clock.

The Pitch: Finance That Doesn’t Close at 4 p.m.

The argument leans on friction people already feel. Richmond pointed to the everyday absurdities of legacy finance — banks and markets that shut at 4 p.m., wire transfers that take days to settle, and certain products gated behind high-net-worth status. Blockchain, in his telling, is the upgrade a financial system overdue for one has been waiting for.

There's no hard launch date for Canada yet. Coinbase says it is working closely with local regulators to get there — a relationship it has cultivated since becoming the first international crypto exchange registered in Canada in April 2024, which gives it a regulatory foundation few competitors can match.

What’s Already Live in the US

The Canadian pitch isn't hypothetical — it's an export. In the United States, Coinbase opened stock and ETF trading to eligible users in February 2026 and launched prediction markets in January through Kalshi, the federally regulated operator now valued at $22 billion. The Everything Exchange roadmap has since grown to encompass nearly 10,000 stocks and ETFs on one platform, alongside an SEC-registered AI investment advisor, AI agents capable of executing trades for users, stock options, and pre-IPO investment products unveiled at the company's June System Update event.

Tokenized Stocks Arrive First

The nearest-term piece is already scheduled. Coinbase plans to launch tokenized stocks this month for users outside the United States, including Canadians — shares in real companies recorded on a blockchain rather than a traditional brokerage system, allowing instant settlement and around-the-clock trading.

Importantly, these aren't synthetic exposure. The assets represent direct ownership backed one-for-one by underlying shares, with holders receiving dividend payments and shareholder voting rights. Richmond also pointed to roughly $1.8 trillion in stablecoin transaction volume during June — a 125% jump from the same month last year — as evidence of how quickly the underlying rails are scaling.

The Missing Piece: A Canadian Dollar Stablecoin

One structural gap remains. Richmond noted that clear rules for a Canadian dollar-pegged stablecoin could unlock a new wave of financial product innovation — and the Bank of Canada is expected to finalize stablecoin regulations in 2027, the last major regulatory piece needed before a CAD stablecoin could go live on the platform.

That timeline effectively sets the pace. Coinbase can bring tokenized equities and eventually the broader Everything Exchange to Canada while working within existing registration, but a fully native experience — Canadians moving in and out of positions in their own currency, on-chain, at any hour — waits on Ottawa. Until then, the company is building the storefront and letting the regulators finish the plumbing.
