Buterin Rejects AI Bitcoin Crash Predictions

Vitalik Buterin rejects AI predictions forecasting a major Bitcoin price crash.

Summary :

  • Vitalik Buterin took the other side of a 50% Bitcoin crash prediction.

  • The bet: AI is unlikely to break Bitcoin's hashes or proof-of-work.

  • The real risk is the transition window, not the cryptography, he says.

  • 40+ crypto firms petitioned AI labs for researcher model access.

  • Wallet and custody failures remain the market's actual weak point.

Vitalik Buterin has taken the other side of a prediction that AI will crash Bitcoin more than 50% within two years, and the reasoning he offered on Sept. 7 is more interesting than the headline: the probability of an actual break in Bitcoin's hashes or proof-of-work is, in his words, tiny. The market's real AI risk lives somewhere else entirely.

The prediction came from AI-risk commentator Liron Shapira, who put 50% confidence on AI threats eroding Bitcoin's perceived network security and driving a halving of price. Buterin's counter, posted on X:

"I take the opposite side of that. My basic reasons are that I am quite optimistic about cybersecurity in the long term and I see the primary problem as being getting the transition, and I expect BTC to handle at least any issues that do not require social consensus well." — Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin), September 7, 2026

Where a Bitcoin crash would actually come from

The distinction Buterin draws is the one that matters for anyone holding coins. Bitcoin's consensus rests on SHA-256 hashing and proof-of-work, and generative AI has shown zero demonstrated capacity to break either. What AI does threaten is everything wrapped around the protocol: wallet key generation, exchange infrastructure, phishing at industrial scale, automated zero-day discovery in open-source codebases. The evidence is already here. The Coldcard entropy flaw reported in July 2026, the same one muddying on-chain OG data, cost over 1,000 BTC. That was wallet software, not cryptography. A protocol can be sound while its users are fleeced.

The industry is acting accordingly. In August, the Bitcoin Policy Institute and more than 40 digital-asset entities, including Block, Coinbase, Strategy, MARA, Galaxy, BitGo, Brink and Trezor, petitioned leading AI labs for early, vetted model access for open-source security researchers. BPI's Zack Shapiro and security specialist Efrat Fenigson warn of a transition window in which attackers wield frontier vulnerability-discovery tools before defenders can. Buterin's own framing matches: the danger is the transition, not the destination.

The skepticism Shapira deserves, and the point he almost lands

Shapira's mechanism is weak where it counts. A crash driven by "diminished perceived robustness" requires the market to lose faith in cryptography that has never failed, while the demonstrable losses, like the Pocket Bitcoin breach and the ongoing phishing campaigns against exchange users, come from custody and credential failures that have never once broken the chain. If AI does trigger a 50% drawdown, it will ride in through an exchange or a wallet vendor, and no amount of SHA-256 confidence will save the price.

But Buterin's concession is the part worth underlining: issues requiring social consensus, meaning a hard fork, are the ones Bitcoin handles badly. If an AI-discovered vulnerability ever reached core signatures, mitigation would demand exactly the slow, contentious coordination Bitcoin is famous for failing at speed. So the honest scorecard: a direct break is a bad bet, a perimeter breach is a live bet, and the transition window is the whole game. Watch what the AI labs do with the researcher-access petition. If they stonewall, the defenders fall further behind during the exact window everyone is arguing about, and the crash call stops being contrarian and starts being a schedule.
