Bitcoin Surges Past $69K as $1B Short Squeeze and SEC Proposal Fuel Rally

Bitcoin Surges Past $69K as $1B Short Squeeze and SEC Proposal Fuel Rally
Bitcoin surged past $69,000 as $1B in shorts were liquidated, fueled by Treasury buybacks and the SEC crypto proposal. Ethereum led with 17% gains.

Bitcoin surged past $69,000 for the first time in two months as over $1 billion in short positions were liquidated within a single hour, fueled by Treasury buyback announcements and a new SEC crypto proposal that reignited risk appetite across digital asset markets.

The largest cryptocurrency climbed more than 7% to briefly touch $70,000, its highest level since June, before settling near $69,000. Ethereum led the broader market rally with a 17% surge past $2,200, while Solana gained 10% and XRP climbed 10%. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization reclaimed significant ground as the short squeeze rippled across battered crypto markets.

The Short Squeeze That Reset the Market

More than $1 billion in Bitcoin short positions were liquidated in approximately one hour, according to data from Coinglass, underscoring the speed of the market reversal. The liquidations accelerated as Bitcoin broke through key resistance levels, forcing traders who had bet on further declines to buy back into the market at higher prices, creating a feedback loop that pushed prices even higher.

The short squeeze was the largest single-hour liquidation event in months, reflecting the heavy short positioning that had built up during Bitcoin's prolonged decline from its October 2025 peak. Traders who had been betting on continued weakness found themselves caught on the wrong side of a sharp reversal, with total crypto liquidations exceeding $1.2 billion across the 24-hour period.

Treasury Buybacks and SEC Proposal Drive the Rally

The rally was not driven solely by short liquidations. The U.S. Treasury Department announced buyback operations that eased pressure on bond yields, with the 30-year yield falling to 5.21% from Monday's 5.31% close. Lower Treasury yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, making the cryptocurrency more attractive relative to fixed-income investments.

The SEC's proposed crypto offering rules, which include a startup offering exemption of up to $5 million over a four-year period, also contributed to the bullish sentiment. The proposal represents the first major crypto-specific regulatory framework from the SEC, providing long-awaited clarity for token issuers. Ethereum Leads Altcoin Recovery

Ethereum's 17% surge made it the standout performer among major cryptocurrencies. The second-largest cryptocurrency reclaimed $2,200 for the first time in weeks, with the rally driven by a combination of oversold conditions, improving fundamentals, and the broader market recovery. Solana gained 10% to $84, while Hyperliquid surged 19% to $69, continuing its strong recent performance.

XRP also participated in the rally, climbing 10% to $1.09, though it remains well below its 2025 highs. The across-the-board recovery suggests that the market had become oversold during the prolonged downturn, with prices disconnected from improving fundamentals including growing adoption, institutional inflows, and regulatory progress. What Comes Next for Bitcoin

Bitcoin's surge to $70,000 represents a significant technical and psychological milestone. The cryptocurrency had been trading in a range between $58,000 and $65,000 for weeks, and the breakout above $68,000-69,000 suggests a potential shift in market structure. However, Bitcoin faces resistance near $70,000, and whether the rally can be sustained will depend on whether the fundamental drivers, including regulatory progress and macroeconomic conditions, continue to support higher prices.

The timing of the rally, ahead of a White House crypto event where President Trump called for passage of a fair CLARITY Act, suggests that political and regulatory developments are increasingly influencing crypto market prices. VanEck has noted that 8 of 12 capitulation signals are flashing, suggesting Bitcoin may be entering an accumulation phase.
