Bitcoin Rally Could Hold as Spot Buying Outpaces Leverage

Bitcoin Rally Could Hold as Spot Buying Outpaces Leverage
Bitcoin's 22% weekly surge is being driven by spot buying and ETF inflows rather than leverage, making the rally more durable than previous ones, according to Bitfinex analysts.

Bitcoin's 22% surge this week — its best five-day run since March 2024 — wasn't fueled by leverage. That's the takeaway from Bitfinex analysts, who say spot buying and ETF inflows are doing the heavy lifting this time, not borrowed money.

The distinction matters. A leverage-driven rally burns hot and fast, powered by traders borrowing to bet on higher prices. When the buying stops, positions unwind and prices fall sharply. A spot-driven rally is different — real buyers are purchasing actual Bitcoin and holding it, which tends to produce more durable price moves.

Bitcoin climbed as high as $79,400 on Friday before pulling back to trade near $78,000. The Fear and Greed Index jumped from 46 to 62 in a single day, then kept climbing to 72 — one of the sharper sentiment swings of the year. Over $4 billion in short positions were liquidated across two days, adding fuel to the rally.

Why Spot Buying Changes the Picture

Bitfinex pointed to three factors supporting the rally's sustainability: accelerating spot ETF inflows ($606 million on August 20, up from $517 million the day before), limited leverage in the system compared to previous rallies, and a broader shift in market structure. When ETFs pull in hundreds of millions daily, that's institutional money buying and holding — not day traders flipping positions.

The leverage picture is notably restrained. During the 2024 bull run, open interest in futures markets spiked alongside price, creating a fragile setup that collapsed when sentiment turned. This time, futures open interest has grown more modestly, suggesting fewer traders are using borrowed money to chase the rally.

The Weekend Test

Thinner weekend liquidity cuts both ways. With fewer active traders, spot buying can push prices higher with less resistance — but it also means any large sell order can trigger a sharper drop. Bitcoin faces an immediate test at $80,000, a level it hasn't touched since early June.

What happens next depends on whether ETF inflows continue on Monday. If institutional buyers return after the weekend with the same appetite, Bitcoin could break through $80,000 and establish a new range. If inflows dry up, the rally may stall as the short-squeeze fuel runs out and the market waits for the next catalyst — likely the September 15 Senate vote on the CLARITY Act.
