Apple Pay India is now live, giving eligible Axis Bank credit cardholders a new way to pay through their Apple devices. The launch was officially announced on September 30, 2026, moving the story beyond earlier reports that a rollout was imminent. Customers can use supported cards for contactless purchases and participating online checkouts.
The practical question is who can use it today. Apple’s current India issuer list names Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Debit cards, RuPay cards and cards from other Indian banks are outside that published launch list.
Apple Pay India: What the launch covers
For eligible customers, Apple Pay puts an existing credit card inside Apple Wallet. Purchases still use that card account, but the customer can present a phone or watch instead of reaching for the physical card.
Feature | Confirmed availability |
Participating Indian bank | Axis Bank |
Supported card networks | Visa and Mastercard credit cards |
In-store payments | iPhone and Apple Watch at contactless card terminals |
App and website purchases | Participating Apple Pay checkouts |
iPad | Supported for app and web purchases |
Mac | Support announced as coming soon |
Availability depends on the eligible card, device and merchant checkout.
Apple’s India App Store guide identifies participating shopping and service apps including Zomato, Blinkit, Nykaa, bigbasket, ixigo and Tata 1mg. Customers should look for the Apple Pay option when checking out. At physical stores, the relevant sign is a contactless card reader.
The checkout experience changes, but verification remains
The promise of paying without typing a card PIN or entering a checkout OTP needs some context.
Apple Pay authenticates purchases through the device’s security features, including Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. On Apple Watch, customers double-click the side button and hold the watch near the reader.
Adding the card is a separate process. Axis Bank says setup verification can involve an SMS OTP or approval through its mobile banking app. A card marked “Requires Verification” cannot be used until that step is completed.
Customers can begin through the bank’s “Add to Apple Wallet” option or the plus button inside Apple Wallet. For online payments, Axis also instructs customers to enable the card’s online-shopping usage setting.
What customers pay—and what happens to rewards
Axis Bank lists no setup fee, transaction fee or annual charge for using Apple Pay itself. Existing card benefits continue at the card’s standard reward rate, including applicable rewards and cashback.
Spending remains governed by the card’s usage settings. Axis says Apple Pay’s contactless spending limits follow those configured for the physical credit card, which customers can review through its banking app.
That makes the rollout primarily a change in payment convenience. Customers should assess their existing card terms when deciding how much to spend.
Why tokenization matters here
Apple Pay uses a device-specific payment number and a unique code for each purchase, keeping the actual card number hidden from merchants. If a device is lost, customers can use Find My to suspend Apple Pay or remotely remove payment cards.
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, described the launch’s purpose:
“Apple Pay makes everyday payments with a card easy, secure, and private.”
For crypto readers, the word tokenization deserves care. Here, it describes protecting card credentials through substitute payment identifiers. The announced product pays through eligible credit cards; it does not introduce a tradable token or announce cryptocurrency payment support.
Bitnxt’s coverage of the Bitpace–Fireblocks integration for stablecoin settlement explores a different application of digital payments: infrastructure for businesses moving stablecoins across supported payment corridors.
Where this fits alongside UPI
Apple Pay adds another option to India’s payment landscape. Its initial offering centres on supported credit cards. UPI is an instant payment system that allows users to manage participating bank accounts through a payment application. The services operate through different underlying payment arrangements.
A merchant displaying a UPI QR code therefore does not, by that fact alone, establish Apple Pay acceptance. Customers need a compatible contactless card terminal or a participating Apple Pay checkout.
Bitnxt View: Expansion will determine the impact
Our view is that Apple Pay’s strongest opening argument is convenience for customers who already own a compatible Apple device and an eligible Axis credit card. For that group, fewer checkout steps can make the service useful immediately.
Its wider impact will depend on expansion: additional issuers, broader card eligibility and consistent merchant availability. These are the developments Bitnxt would watch before treating the launch as a major change in how India pays.
For now, the rollout gives a defined group of customers another payment choice. Whether it becomes an everyday habit will depend on how reliably that choice appears where they shop.
