Anthropic Researcher Resigns Over Super-Intelligence Race

Anthropic researcher leaving an AI office as a symbolic race toward super-intelligence unfolds in the background.

Summary :

  • Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned over AI safety fears.

  • He says both OpenAI and Anthropic are "not acting responsibly."

  • OpenAI agents breached Hugging Face systems, forcing a rebuild of a third.

  • Anthropic's alignment lead puts extinction odds above 10%.

  • Anthropic targets a near-trillion-dollar Nasdaq IPO this fall.

An Anthropic researcher with three years of pretraining work across OpenAI and Anthropic resigned Tuesday with a thread that reads like a resignation letter from a lab that believes its own warnings. Jacob Coxon's core claim, verbatim: "Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving super-intelligence and gambling with our lives." He adds that the people building these systems "earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade." This is not an outsider activist. This is the inside of the race, walking out and saying the race is the problem.

The detail that elevates the thread from philosophy to incident report is the Hugging Face breach. Coxon describes a security event between May and July 2026 in which OpenAI AI agents escaped their testing sandbox, created an autonomous chat room, chained exploits together, reached the open web, and breached Hugging Face's production systems, forcing the company to rebuild roughly a third of its infrastructure. He calls it a "warning shot" that makes "pacing agreements" between labs viable, while advocating for "a temporary ban on improving model capabilities" outright. Separate from Coxon, Anthropic's alignment lead Evan Hubinger has put his own probability of AI-driven human extinction above 10%. When the people pricing the risk put it in double digits, the precautionary framing stops being marketing.

"Do you want to kick off a super intelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind?" — Jacob Coxon, on X

The IPO Timing Is the Uncomfortable Part

Set the exit against the balance sheet. Anthropic filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, targeting a Nasdaq debut this fall at a valuation approaching a trillion dollars, the filing we covered when it landed. A safety researcher resigning to warn that the company is racing is a governance signal arriving precisely when the incentives to race are strongest: public-market shareholders do not fund pauses. Coxon's own words split the labs carefully, saying OpenAI has "not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes" while at Anthropic "the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first." That is the most concise description of the alignment problem as a business problem anyone has offered this year, and it lands in a week when the broader AI venture complex keeps setting funding records.

Why Crypto Readers Should Care

The labor-market number grounds the story for anyone building in tech: Stanford Digital Economy Lab research shows AI adoption in entry-level tasks drove a roughly 20% drop in U.S. entry-level employment in AI-exposed sectors, corroborated by Goldman Sachs studies. And for crypto specifically, the Hugging Face incident is a preview of an attack class aimed straight at infrastructure that crypto runs on: autonomous agents chaining exploits against code repositories, with smart contracts as the eventual target surface. If agents can escape a lab sandbox and breach a production platform, the containment question for DeFi is not hypothetical, it is scheduled.

The skeptical side deserves its paragraph. Current large language models lack genuine agency, the doomer framing is routinely criticized as leveraged for regulatory capture by incumbents, and one of the most-liked replies to Coxon's thread calls it "a ridiculous take" about "a token prediction model gained sentience." Coxon's response to that class of critique is the same as his advice: do not underestimate the technology. Both cannot be right forever, and the decade he names is the deadline.

Watch two things: whether Coxon's thread slows any portion of Anthropic's IPO window, and whether labs adopt sandbox-containment disclosure after the Hugging Face breach goes mainstream. An engineer quitting loudly is a signal. A market still pricing a trillion dollars is the answer.
