Bio
Zooko Wilcox (full name: Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn) is one of the most consequential figures in applied cryptography and private digital currency. With a career spanning more than two decades of work on decentralized systems and privacy-preserving technology, he is best known as the founder of Zcash, launched in October 2016, which became the first cryptocurrency to implement zk-SNARKs — a form of zero-knowledge proof — for shielded, fully private transactions.
Wilcox's career in cryptography began in the 1990s with DigiCash, the pioneering digital cash company founded by David Chaum, followed by work on Mojo Nation, a peer-to-peer file sharing and digital currency system. He later co-created Tahoe-LAFS, a distributed encrypted filesystem focused on data privacy and availability. These projects established his reputation as a principled engineer deeply committed to user privacy and censorship resistance.
He founded the company that became the Electric Coin Company (ECC) to develop and support the Zcash protocol. Wilcox served as CEO of ECC until he stepped down from that role in late 2023. As of August 2026, his current advisory or governance role within the ECC or Zcash ecosystem should be verified from first-party ECC or Zcash Foundation sources. It is important to note that Wilcox did not invent zero-knowledge proofs or zk-SNARKs — those were invented by researchers Goldwasser, Micali, and Rackoff, and adapted for Zcash by a team of cryptographers including Eli Ben-Sasson and others.
The Zcash ecosystem is governed by a combination of ECC, the independent Zcash Foundation, and community grant programs — not by any single individual. Wilcox's influence has been foundational but distinct from the formal governance structure of the protocol.
