Bio
Founder of xx network; Digital Cash & Privacy Pioneer
David Chaum is a foundational cryptographer whose work predates Bitcoin by decades. His academic and applied contributions — including blind signatures, mix networks, and digital cash systems — established core privacy-preserving primitives that underpin much of modern cryptography and blockchain design. He founded DigiCash in the late 1980s and developed eCash, one of the earliest practical digital currency implementations.
Today, Chaum leads the xx network, a quantum-resistant blockchain platform that integrates cMix/cMixx — a privacy-preserving messaging and transaction routing architecture derived from his mix network research. The xx network is designed to provide both transaction and metadata privacy, addressing what Chaum has long argued is the critical flaw in most "private" blockchain designs: leaking communication and timing metadata even when transaction content is encrypted.
Academic & Historical Background
Chaum completed his PhD in Computer Science (dissertation on cryptographic protocols for computer systems) and built an extensive academic record in cryptography. His landmark 1982 paper introduced the concept of blind signatures, and his 1981 work on untraceable electronic mail through mix networks became foundational to anonymous communication research. He founded DigiCash in Amsterdam and implemented eCash — a blind-signature-based electronic cash system trialed with several banks in the 1990s. DigiCash filed for bankruptcy in 1998, but its intellectual legacy directly influenced later Bitcoin and privacy-coin designs.
xx network — Current Project
The xx network is a blockchain platform designed with quantum resistance in mind, using a consensus mechanism and cryptographic primitives intended to withstand attacks from quantum computers. Its signature privacy feature is cMixx — a batched mixing protocol for messages and transactions that obscures metadata (who communicates with whom and when) as well as content. The native token, xx coin, is used for staking, governance, and network fees. The network is governed by a decentralized node operator community with staking-based participation rights.
Current 2026 Work
As of August 2026, Chaum remains a founder and key research leader of the xx network. His work focuses on privacy-preserving payment architecture, messaging protocols with quantum-resistance properties, and digital identity research. Claims about practical quantum resistance should be understood as design-forward engineering goals; no current blockchain is considered immune from all future quantum attacks, and Chaum's team distinguishes deployed protections from forward-looking goals.
Key Contributions
- Blind Signatures (1982): Invented blind signature cryptography — a technique enabling digital cash where the issuer cannot link a withdrawn coin to its later spending.
- Mix Networks (1981): Developed mix network architecture for untraceable electronic communication, foundational to anonymous remailers and Tor-like systems.
- eCash / DigiCash: Built the first commercially deployed electronic cash system with cryptographic privacy guarantees.
- xx network & cMixx: Founded xx network and developed the cMixx protocol — a practical implementation of mix network principles for blockchain-era privacy.
- Quantum-Resistant Design: Advocated for and implemented post-quantum cryptographic primitives in blockchain infrastructure.
- Privacy Voting Research: Contributed to secure, privacy-preserving electronic voting system designs.
