2004 — Gaming VC Holdings Founded
The company was incorporated in Luxembourg in 2004 as Gaming VC Holdings S.A., founded by a group of American businesspersons led by Steve Barlow. The company made its IPO on the AIM exchange on December 21, 2004, raising funds to acquire Casino-Club, an online casino that was reportedly the largest online gambling operator in German-speaking countries.
2010 — Reorganized as GVC Holdings
Gaming VC was reorganized in the Isle of Man as GVC Holdings, establishing the corporate structure that would drive the company's future acquisition strategy.
2012 — Sportingbet Acquisition
GVC and William Hill jointly acquired Sportingbet, with William Hill taking the Australian and Spanish markets and GVC taking the remaining international markets. This established GVC as a significant international online gambling operator.
2016 — Bwin.Party Acquisition
GVC acquired Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment for £1.1 billion after a bidding battle with rival 888 Holdings. The acquisition added bwin, PartyPoker, and other brands to GVC's portfolio and led to a marked recovery in the company's financial situation. After the acquisition, Bwin.Party returned to growth after years of falling sales.
2018 — Ladbrokes Coral Acquisition
In December 2017, GVC agreed to buy Ladbrokes Coral in a deal worth up to £4 billion, completed in March 2018. The acquisition made GVC the largest retail betting operator in the UK with over 3,000 shops and added iconic brands Ladbrokes and Coral to the portfolio.
2018 — MGM Joint Venture
In July 2018, GVC agreed to a $200 million deal with MGM Resorts International to capitalize on the newly liberalized US sports betting market, forming the BetMGM joint venture. The JV combines MGM's brand and retail presence with GVC's (now Entain's) technology and betting expertise.
2020 — Rebrand to Entain
In December 2020, GVC Holdings changed its name to Entain plc, reflecting a "new era of sustainability and conduct." The rebranding included a commitment to operate only in fully regulated markets by 2023, exiting unregulated markets.
2021 — MGM Takeover Offer Rejected
In 2021, Entain's joint venture partner MGM Resorts made an $11 billion offer to buy Entain. The board and CEO Shay Segev rejected the offer, saying it "significantly undervalues the company and its prospects." MGM subsequently withdrew the offer.
2021 — First Female CEO of UK-Listed Gambling Company
In January 2021, Jette Nygaard-Andersen succeeded Shay Segev as CEO, becoming the first woman to lead a UK-listed gambling company. She led the company's expansion into regulated markets and the BetMGM growth in the US.
2021–2023 — International Acquisitions
Entain acquired Unikrn (esports betting, 2021), Sports Interaction (Canada, 2022), SuperSport (Croatia, 2022), BetCity (Netherlands, 2023), and continued to expand its regulated market portfolio. The company exited all unregulated markets by 2023.
2024–2025 — Leadership Transition & Revenue Growth
Stella David succeeded as CEO, and Entain reported £5.3 billion in revenue for 2025. The company continued to focus on BetMGM growth in the US and its dominant UK retail and online position through Ladbrokes and Coral.
