Art Blocks

Art Blocks, founded in 2020 by technologist, designer, and artist Erick Calderon (known as Snowfro), is the premier platform for on-chain generative NFT art. It pioneered a model where artists write creative code (an algorithm), and each collector's purchase triggers the algorithm to mint a unique, never-before-seen iteration of the artwork directly on Ethereum — a permanent, on-chain record of both the script and the unique output it produced.

The platform's founding collection, Snowfro's Chromie Squiggle, remains the symbolic heart of the Art Blocks ecosystem and one of the most iconic generative-art NFTs ever minted.

Each work is created the moment it's collected. An artist writes the algorithm; the algorithm makes the artwork; every piece is unique, and the record of it is permanent. The combination of on-chain code storage and pseudorandom generator inputs means the artwork exists forever on Ethereum, verifiable by anyone — not just as an image, but as its birth algorithm.

Art Blocks runs a tiered release system:

• Art Blocks Curated — the flagship tier, representing the highest standard of innovation, technical mastery, and aesthetic excellence in generative art. Releases are hand-selected by the Art Blocks curation team.
• Art Blocks Presents — a tier for artist collaborators working with the broader ecosystem (e.g., Art Blocks Studio — live mints).
• Playground (Active Feb 2021 - Oct 2022) — a space for previously Curated artists to experiment and innovate independently.
• Factory (Active Mar 2021 - Oct 2022) — a more streamlined platform for generative artists to explore different styles and release mechanics.

Art Blocks' fee model is creator-friendly and tier-based.

Art Blocks does not support fiat or card payments; primary mints and secondary settlements occur in ETH on Ethereum mainnet.

On-chain algorithmic generation

Artists write a creative algorithm and publish it on-chain. Each collector's trigger executes the algorithm against a pseudorandom seed, producing a unique output. Both the algorithm and the resulting artwork are stored permanently on Ethereum — making Art Blocks the pioneer of true on-chain generative art.

Curated / Playground / Factory tiers

Art Blocks Curated represents the highest standard of innovation, technical mastery, and aesthetic excellence in generative art. Releases are hand-selected by the curation team. Playground (Feb 2021 - Oct 2022) gave previously Curated artists space to experiment independently. Factory (Mar 2021 - Oct 2022) was a more streamlined platform for broader release mechanics.

Artist-owned algorithms

Artists retain ownership of their creative code. Each published algorithm becomes a verifiable, on-chain asset — preserving the script's provenance even as its outputs continue across resales and exhibitions.

Art Blocks Studio enables live generative minting events where collectors watch the algorithm execute in real time as they mint, creating moments of discovery and serendipity around each release.
