Overview

The BitBox02 Multi from Shift Crypto is a Swiss-made, fully open-source hardware wallet designed for users who want both uncompromising security and a frictionless, mobile-friendly experience. Priced at €124.17 (~$135 USD, 0% VAT), it slots in as one of the most affordable premium wallets in the Tier-1 peer group while delivering arguably the strongest open-source pedigree of any device in this directory.

Unlike many competitors that bundle firmware with a closed-source secure element, the BitBox02 runs a dual-chip architecture that combines a Microchip ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller with open-source firmware alongside an ATECC608B secure chip for physical attack resistance. The result is verifiable security (deterministic builds, WalletScrutiny independently reproducible) hardened against brute-force, supply-chain and invasive attacks.

The Multi edition stores and signs Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) with ERC20 tokens, Cardano (ADA), Litecoin (LTC), and 1,500+ additional tokens, and doubles as a FIDO U2F second-factor authenticator for Google, GitHub, Dropbox and other compatible services. (A separate Bitcoin-only edition exists with a reduced attack surface — see our dedicated profile.)

Setup is refreshingly simple: seed backup is instant to the included microSD card (no transcription errors), with the optional display of BIP-39 recovery words on the bright 128×64 OLED display. The capacitive touch sensors — tap, slide, hold — replace physical buttons for a clean, button-free interface closer to a smartphone than a calculator.

Wallet software ships through the BitBoxApp (desktop + Android). The original BitBox02 does not work on iPhone or iPad — for iOS users, Shift Crypto offers the BitBox02 Nova.

Pros

  • Fully open-source with reproducible, independently verified builds
  • Swiss-made quality with 2-year warranty
  • Dual-chip architecture (open MCU + ATECC608B secure element)
  • Instant microSD-card backup — no transcription errors
  • Bright 128×64 px OLED display with clear signing
  • Capacitive touch interface (tap/slide/hold)
  • FIDO U2F support for Google, GitHub, Dropbox logins
  • Encrypted USB channel using the Noise protocol
  • Connect to your own Bitcoin full node for privacy
  • Affordable at €124.17 (~$135 USD) — strong value vs. Tier-1 peers
  • External audit by Census Labs + public bug bounty program

Cons

  • No Bluetooth or wireless connectivity
  • Not compatible with iPhone or iPad (need the BitBox02 Nova)
  • Coin set smaller than Ledger/Trezor (1,500+ tokens, not 5,000+)
  • No native staking in the BitBoxApp — staking requires third-party services
  • No NFT support in the BitBoxApp
  • Microcontroller is not the secure chip itself, leaving a small residual physical-attack window

Features & Benefits

Invisible touch sensors

Tap to navigate and select, slide to verify receive addresses character-by-character, and hold to confirm transactions — eliminating accidental confirms.

Instant microSD backup

Backups are written to a microSD card instantly from the BitBoxApp, eliminating the risk of transcription errors when writing down seed words by hand. New backups can be created at any time, on a fresh card or by displaying the 24-word recovery phrase.

128×64 px OLED display

The large display lets you verify transaction details and receive addresses before signing, so the device never signs something you can't see.

Mobile-ready USB-C

Plug directly into a USB-C Android phone or modern laptop. A USB-A adapter and an extension cable are included in the box.

FIDO U2F authentication

Use the BitBox02 Multi as a hardware second-factor key for Google, GitHub, Dropbox and other U2F-compatible websites — a meaningful security upgrade versus SMS or app-based 2FA.

Encrypted USB channel

Communication between the BitBox and the host computer is encrypted using the Noise protocol, so any malware sniffing the USB bus cannot decipher what is happening between host and device.

Connect to your own full node

The BitBoxApp can connect to your own Bitcoin full node, so your wallet history and address queries never leak to Shift Crypto's servers.

In the box

  • BitBox02 hardware wallet (Multi edition)
  • microSD card
  • USB-C to USB-A adapter
  • USB-C extension cable
  • Rubber pulls
  • Labeling stickers

  • Microcontroller: ATSAMD51J20A; 120 MHz 32-bit Cortex-M4F
  • Secure chip: ATECC608B (NIST SP 800-90A/B/C TRNG)
  • Display: 128×64 px white OLED
  • Material: Polycarbonate
  • Size: 54.5 × 25.4 × 9.6 mm

Security Architecture

Dual-chip security architecture

Shift Crypto pioneered the dual-chip concept with the original BitBox. The microcontroller (ATSAMD51J20A) runs fully open-source firmware that is publicly auditable, while a separate ATECC608B secure chip hardens physical access. Three secrets are required to unlock the wallet seed — the secure chip's random secret, the microcontroller's random secret, and your device password — so a thief must compromise all three.

Encrypted seed in RAM

The wallet seed is stored encrypted in RAM during use and only decrypted transiently when signing a transaction. This shrinks the attack surface even if the RAM is somehow accessed by an attacker.

Five-source seed entropy

The wallet seed is generated from five independent entropy sources cryptographically combined so the overall entropy is at least as strong as the strongest source, not the weakest. Even if four of the five are compromised, the seed remains secure.

Open-source & reproducible builds

All BitBox code — firmware, BitBoxApp, schematics, X-rays — is open-source on GitHub. Firmware builds are reproducible, regularly audited by WalletScrutiny, and signed by community members for binary transparency.

Secure bootloader

Only Shift-Crypto-signed firmware boots. Downgrades are prevented, and Multi edition firmware will not run on a Bitcoin-only device, enforcing edition integrity.

Device authenticity check

Each BitBox is loaded with a secret attestation key at the factory. The BitBoxApp (or any connected wallet) verifies device authenticity on every connection — clones or tampered devices are caught immediately.

Physical protection

  • Secure-chip monotonic counter limits total password attempts even if the microcontroller's 10-attempt limit is bypassed.
  • Epoxy potting covers both the microcontroller and secure chip to resist invasive probing.
  • Breaking pins — glue is chosen so opening the casing snaps the pins, making tampering physically obvious.

Independent audit & bug bounty

Firmware was externally audited by Census Labs alongside consultancies from multiple third-party security firms. Shift Crypto also runs an open bug bounty program encouraging responsible disclosure.

About Shift Crypto (Switzerland)

About Shift Crypto

Shift Crypto is a Swiss Bitcoin and crypto security company based in Zürich, Switzerland. The first BitBox hardware wallet shipped in 2015, and every security improvement since has culminated in the BitBox02 (Multi & Bitcoin-only editions) and the newer iOS-compatible BitBox02 Nova.

The company is fundamentally open-source — firmware, the BitBoxApp desktop/mobile apps, hardware schematics and even X-ray images of the device are published on GitHub for anyone to audit. The team actively supports reproducible builds and welcomes community review.

Every BitBox is manufactured in Switzerland and ships with a 2-year warranty. Shift Crypto also runs an active engineering blog covering wallet security, privacy, Bitcoin/Lightning, and the broader self-custody conversation.

Trustpilot rating: 4.8/5 (excellent).
