Rainbow Swap

Rainbow (rainbow.me) is a popular self-custodial Ethereum (and L2) crypto wallet built for retail, with a built-in cross-chain swap and bridge product branded as Rainbow Swap. Available as both a mobile app (iOS + Android) and a browser extension (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Arc), Rainbow is one of the most-used non-custodial Ethereum wallets in crypto. It is operated by Rainbow (the company) and is not a custodial exchange - the user holds their own private keys (12-word recovery phrase, optionally iCloud-backed-up via Apple's Secure Enclave on iOS).

Rainbow was launched in 2019 as one of the first mobile-first Ethereum wallets, and the browser extension followed in 2022 as Rainbow positioned itself as a power-user wallet with keyboard-driven flow (the Magic Menu, accessible by pressing Cmd-K in the extension). Rainbow is famous for its playful, colorful design, rich NFT support (3D, AR, video, audio art) and a relentless UX focus - particularly for power users who manage many wallets, transact frequently, and want deep NFT support alongside DeFi.

Rainbow Swap specifically is the wallet's integrated swap / bridge product: type any token, pick the destination chain, and Rainbow's swap router aggregates liquidity across every major Ethereum DEX (Uniswap, Sushi, Balancer, Curve, 0x) and bridge (Across, Hop, Stargate, Squid, Socket, Hop, deBridge) to find the best execution route - then routes the transaction with Flashbots protection to prevent sandwich attacks and MEV extraction. For most retail Ethereum / L2 users, Rainbow Swap is one of the simplest ways to swap tokens without leaving the wallet UX.

Rainbow Mobile (iOS + Android)

Rainbow launched as a mobile-first wallet in 2019. Notable features on mobile include iCloud Backup (Apple Secure Enclave-based encrypted key backup for users who don't want to manage a 12-word seed phrase manually), biometric unlock, in-app token swap, NFT gallery with 3D / AR / video / audio rendering, and a wallet-connectable DApp browser.

Rainbow Extension - the power-user desktop wallet

Launched in 2022, the Rainbow browser extension (download at rainbow.me/download with availability on Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-Ons, Firefox Add-Ons, and Arc browser) is positioned as a high-productivity desktop wallet. The standout feature is the Magic Menu - press Cmd-K (or Ctrl-K on Windows) from anywhere in the extension and a command palette opens where you can type or use keyboard shortcuts: K = Magic Menu, 1 = Switch wallet, X = Swap, S = Send, W = Wallets. This is the same kind of keyboard-first UX popularized by professional dev tools (Linear, Notion, Raycast) - very unusual in consumer crypto wallets.

Cross-chain Swap and Bridge

Rainbow Swap is the integrated swap + bridge product. The wallet router aggregates liquidity across every major Ethereum DEX (Uniswap, SushiSwap, Balancer, Curve, 0x Matcha) and every major bridge (Across, Hop, Stargate, Squid, Socket, Hop, deBridge, CCTP) to produce the best execution route across 50+ EVM chains. The result is the user experience shown in the marketing as "Swap and bridge - it just works" - type the token, pick the chain, execute. Cross-chain swaps (e.g. swap ARB tokens on Arbitrum into OP on Optimism directly inside the wallet) are supported end-to-end.

Flashbots MEV protection

Rainbow routes all swap transactions through Flashbots (the leading Ethereum block builder / MEV protection network) so swap transactions are not exposed to the public mempool. This prevents sandwich attacks - other mempool watchers cannot front-run the user's swap. The protection is automatic on all Rainbow Swap routing.

Manage hundreds of wallets at once

Rainbow's multi-wallet support is industry-leading: import, organize, swap between, and reorder dozens (or hundreds) of separate wallet addresses inside both the extension and the mobile app. Watch / impersonate wallet addresses - load any address as read-only without holding private keys (useful for tracking portfolios, ENS lookups, treasury monitoring).

Rich NFT support

Rainbow has been one of the most NFT-native wallets since launch. The mobile gallery supports 3D, AR (augmented reality), video, and audio-rendered NFT artwork out of the box - the wallet is a media player as much as a portfolio manager. The extension has separate NFT collections, marketplace integration (OpenSea, Blur, Rarible), and ENS avatar support.

iCloud / cloud backup

For users who cannot (or do not want to) manage a 12-word recovery phrase, Rainbow mobile offers optional iCloud Backup - the seed phrase is encrypted and stored in the user's iCloud Keychain (Apple Secure Enclave-backed), recoverable via the user's Apple ID and biometric unlock. This is a meaningful accessibility feature for the retail audience and is increasingly the standard in modern non-custodial mobile wallets.

Self-custodial - you hold your own keys

Rainbow is fully self-custodial. The wallet generates a 12-word BIP-39 recovery phrase locally on the device during initial setup, and the user's private keys are stored in device-native secure storage (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore). The Rainbow team never holds user keys, cannot access user funds, cannot freeze user accounts, and cannot recover a lost wallet if the user loses both their recovery phrase and their iCloud backup. This is the standard self-custodial model - "not your keys, not your coins" applies literally - so the user must keep their seed phrase safe.

iCloud / cloud backup as a security feature

For iOS users, Rainbow offers optional iCloud Backup that encrypts the user's seed phrase with Apple Secure Enclave-backed encryption. The encrypted backup is restorable on a new device only via the user's Apple ID and biometric unlock. This is meaningfully more convenient than seed-phrase-only recovery but trades some model assumptions - the user is trusting Apple as the recovery channel instead of their physical seed phrase storage.

Open-source

Rainbow is open-source on GitHub (github.com/rainbow-me/rainbow) - the React Native mobile app, the browser extension, and the swap router library (rainbowkit / scooper) are all public repos. This means security researchers, independent auditors, and the broader Ethereum developer community can review the code that holds user keys. The team has run external audits and accepts security reports through coordinated disclosure.

Flashbots MEV protection

Rainbow routes all swap transactions through Flashbots private order flow, which means the swap transactions are not exposed to the public Ethereum mempool. This protects against sandwich attacks (a sequencer front-running the swap to extract value from the user) - one of the most common MEV-extraction patterns retail users lose money to. Flashbots protection is enabled automatically on Rainbow Swap routing; no user configuration is needed.

Hardware wallet support (extension)

The Rainbow Extension supports Ledger hardware wallets for users who want the additional security of a hardware signer. Mobile hardware wallet support is more limited on the rainbow app (mobile wallets' hardware support has historically been hardware-specific and varies by hardware vendor).

Wallet - free to download and use

Rainbow is a free download on iOS App Store, Google Play, Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-Ons, and Firefox Add-Ons. There is no subscription, no monthly fee, no premium tier. The Rainbow company makes money through affiliate / referral fees embedded in the swap router (see below), not through charging users to use the wallet.

Swap fee - 0.85% service fee (added to network + DEX fees)

Rainbow Swap adds a 0.85% service fee on top of the underlying DEX / bridge network fees on most swap routes. The total cost of a swap = network gas (paid to Ethereum / L2 miners) + DEX fee (~0.05-0.30% per swap routed via Uniswap / Sushi / 0x) + bridge fee (varying by bridge protocol, typically 0.05-0.15%) + Rainbow 0.85% service fee. For users who swap frequently, the cumulative service fee on top can add up; for retail users who swap occasionally, the convenience of an integrated swap with Flashbots protection is typically worth it. The full fee breakdown is shown transparently in the swap confirmation step before the user signs.

Network gas (paid to Ethereum / L2)

Ethereum L1 gas can be a few dollars during congestion to cents during quiet periods. L2s (Optimism, Arbitrum, Base, Zora, Polygon) have sub-cent gas. Rainbow does not charge gas - the gas fee is paid to the underlying chain's validators, and Rainbow just passes through the gas cost in the swap confirmation UI. For L2 swaps especially, the biggest cost component is usually the 0.85% Rainbow service fee, not network gas.

Bridge and swap aggregation

For cross-chain swaps (e.g. swap ETH on Optimism for ARB on Arbitrum), Rainbow aggregates liquidity across multiple bridges (Across, Hop, Stargate, Squid, Socket, deBridge, CCTP) to find the cheapest route. The bridge protocol fee is shown transparently and is a combination of the bridge operator's fee + the destination chain's gas. Rainbow's 0.85% applies on top of all routed fees.

Rainbow supports 50+ EVM chains as of July 2026, with the largest selection in any modern Ethereum wallet. The Qualcomm-quivalent headline chains include Ethereum mainnet (L1), all major Ethereum L2s - Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Zora, Polygon, zkSync Era, Linea, Scroll, Mode, Blast, Manta Pacific, Mantle, Cronos, Celo - and several non-L2 EVM chains like BSC (BNB Chain), Avalanche C-Chain, Fantom, Gnosis Chain, and more. Rainbow integrates with bridges (Across, Hop, Stargate, Squid, Socket, deBridge, CCTP) so users can swap cross-chain without leaving the wallet.

Rainbow does not currently support non-EVM chains natively (no Solana, no Cosmos, no Move-VM chains). For Bitcoin / Solana / Cosmos support, users need a separate wallet (Phantom for Solana, Keplr for Cosmos, etc.). Rainbow's focus is firmly on the Ethereum ecosystem and EVM L2s.
