What the Blackcat Card is
Blackcatcard is a European account rather than a crypto-first product: a euro IBAN plus Mastercard cards, operated by Papaya Ltd, an Electronic Money Institution authorised and regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority, and running since 2019. Card issue is free, delivery is free worldwide, and there is no monthly fee on a single card.
The published fee schedule is refreshingly complete
Where several cards in this directory hide their costs, Blackcat publishes them:
- Account: opening free, maintenance free with one card, EUR 10 for a paper statement, EUR 15 per month dormancy fee (the first six months are accumulated and charged together in month seven).
- Cards: first card free, additional card EUR 7, reissue on expiry free, standard delivery free, express delivery priced individually, True Name option EUR 5.
- ATM: first EUR 200 per month free, then 1% with a EUR 1.50 minimum, capped at EUR 5,000 per day and EUR 10,000 per month.
- Transfers: first five outgoing SEPA transfers per month free, then EUR 0.20 each; incoming SEPA free; internal transfers free and unlimited; sending to any card worldwide costs 3%.
Holding two or more cards triggers a EUR 2 monthly charge, so the free-maintenance position depends on how many cards you run.
Rewards, which are the surprise
Blackcat pays a per annum reward on your balance, cashback on card purchases, and category cashback on Google Play and Amazon. It is rare to find a balance reward alongside a free card and no monthly fee, and the marketing rates are published in its loyalty materials with terms applied per category.
The crypto service - present, but not front and centre
Blackcat does operate a crypto service inside the app: a crypto section with wallet addresses and QR codes, transfers internally between Blackcat users or externally to any wallet, documented Bitcoin and Ethereum protocols, and a hard rule that the full name of the sender and recipient must match on every transfer or the operation is subject to additional checks and delays. Access is restricted, and limits are set out in the help centre rather than advertised.
Worth being straight about: the crypto service is not marketed on the new site at all - it survives on the legacy help centre, which carries a notice that it is out of date - so it is best treated as an in-app feature to confirm rather than a headline benefit. Reputation is also genuinely mixed: App Store and Google Play sit around 3.2, while Trustpilot is notably lower at 1.9 across several hundred reviews, with complaints spanning both the app and, in some cases, the crypto service.
Who it suits
For an EEA resident who wants a euro account with a free Mastercard, published fees, free ATM withdrawals up to EUR 200 a month, cashback and a balance reward, Blackcat is a strong practical choice - and the MFSA licence means your e-money sits inside a regulated European framework. If crypto spending is the priority, compare Jeton Card for a similar EMI model with crypto funding, or browse the crypto cards directory.
